Fish house rules

I have a question about leaving my fish house on a lake in Minnesota. If I have my house set up on a lake and I am inside fishing its my understanding that I dont need to have my name address or phone number on the side. If I leave it unattended on a lake I know I have to have some information on it but what exactly do I have to have? Im out of state (I dont know if that matters). Do the letters have to be a certain height? Is it legal to put my information on a small piece of plywood and hang it on the side when on the lake then be able to remove it when on land. Does it have to be on all 4 sides of the house? If so I have a V front so do I have to put it on all 5 sides? I know this is alot of questions but Im a little lost on this

On any fish shack either permanent or portable has to have your name and address, or Driver's license number , or DNR number. My preference is the DNR number because there is a less of a chance of identity theft.

The numbers have to be 4" tall and have to be hung on the shack at all times even if you are in the shack. For a permanent shack you have to have a shack license. For portables there is no need for a license.

You only need to have the license on one side of the shack. Most people will post the numbers on their doors or next to the door.

Hope that helps with your questions.

thanks bassman. Do you get a dnr number each year you purchase an out of state license or do you have to get it some other way? Do you need a shack license if you pull the house onto land for storage each time you leave the lake?

• All shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the

(1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the

nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly

and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least

2 inches in height.

From MN DNR site........

When you buy your license the DNR number will be on it, for residents. For non-residents I honestly don't know. If it isn't you can just put your drivers license # or name and address on it.

It needs to be licensed if it's left on the lake unattended. If you are always with it and take it off the lake when you're done fishing it does not need a license. It's not legal to leave it at the landing, however. Many people do this but you're not supposed to.

If you're out of state, you have to post the date, time, lake, and size of your catches (and what they were biting on) on this board within 15 minutes of a hot bite or you face VERY stiff penalties.

Shelters (fish houses and dark houses)

The following regulations apply to all shelters used on all Minnesota

waters, unless otherwise noted elsewhere in this booklet.

• All shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the

(

1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the

nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly

and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least

2 inches in height.

• A shelter may not be left unattended anytime between midnight and

one hour prior to sunrise unless the shelter is licensed.

Note: The Dept. of Public Safety–DVS requires trailers used to haul fish

houses or dark houses and enclosed trailers or recreational trailers used

for fishing to be registered. See your local Deputy Registrar for trailer

registration.

• A tag, furnished

with a license, must be attached to the exterior in a

readily visible location.

• Shelters left on the ice overnight need to have at least 2 square inches

of reflective material on each side of the house.

• No person may erect a shelter within 10 feet of an existing shelter.

• A shelter license is not required on border waters with WI, IA, ND, and SD.

• Shelters must comply with the identification requirements of the state

for which the angler is licensed.

• Shelters may be used for fishing within the Boundary Waters Canoe

Area Wilderness (BWCAW), but must be removed from the ice each

night. The structure must be removed from the BWCAW each time the

occupant leaves the BWCAW.
