Ray Esboldt
Best rod explosion I ever witnessed was one of my own. I am old enough to have fished with Shakespeare Carbon rods back in the 1980s (Deitz and RK might remember them). I set the hook with it (happened to be a rock) and all I was left with was the guides dangling on my line, the butt with about 6 inches of frayed carbon/graphite hanging out, and a million splinters all over the boat. That was a sight to behold.
Raider4ever
I had a pistol handled rod nearly disintegrate while trying to pull a spinnerbait out of a bulrush reed in the early 90's. It was kinda neat actually.
CHM
It can happen to any graphite rod. Is one of the breaks right in front of the reel seat? If so, that happened on the rebound. It is actually a common occurrence to get a multi-piece break. All it takes is a slight ding in a rod to cause it to explode. Even trailering down the road, or WOT on the lake can damage a rod if you have a jig, or dropshot or Carolina rig sinker banging away on it. They say it sounds like a .22 rifle when they go.If you found all the sections, examine each break and look for signs of damage such as nicks or scuff marks.I am not saying that you caused the damage that resulted in the break, but that is often, unknowingly, the case.
