mason
I am set to go to Lac Suel in Canada (about 6 hours North of International Falls, MN) on Sept. 4-11. It's big Walleye and Northern Pike (from what I'm told). I've never had the opportunity to fish North of Colorado. I have somewhat of an idea of what to use, but I can still use some help. I am using an Ugly Stick as my first rod w/ a Sonora 3 bearing reel. Does anybody have suggestions as to lures and/or bait? And any equipment ideas would be helpful as well. Thanks for your help!Mason------------------
can it be luck?
Hi Mason, welcome to FM. Look in the Canada forum for info on Lac Seul. There are several threads discussing Lac Seul as well neighboring waters. A post in that forum will probably get you better results. Fish Head
Hi Mason,I didn't see you post in the Canada section, so I'll answer you here. For bait there is only one thing you will need: Jig and minnow. That will catch you more fish than anything else. As far as rod an reel, I personally don't care much for an ugly stick. I would go to a quality sporting goods store and tell them you need a good walleye rod/reel. They should be able to show you several in your price range.Have a great trip! Rolly22
Ditto on the bait suggestion, I've been fishing up there for 20+years and I don't think I've used anything but a jig and a minnow. Fish should be out on the bars and sunken islands. Could be deep so bring some larger jigs (3/8 or 1/2 oz.) and use the brighter colors. For a rod you should be able to get a decent rod for between $50 to $100 depending on your budget. Get something close to a 6'-6'6" medium or medium light spinning rod with a decent Shimano reel. I like to use the superbraid's for line. You don't lose as many jigs and when your fishing deeper your hooksets are more effective and I believe its more sensitive. Big Northerns will be mixed in with the walleye's but if you want to target them specifically get a baitcasting set up and throw some bucktails or stickbaits. Its a great Muskie are too, so be ready. Best of Luck, you'll have a blast.[This message has been edited by Rolly22 (edited 08-23-2004).]
fishnutbob
Jig and minnow and I would take some raps along five or six shad rap and husky jurk silver and some blue, and yes get a good rod and real 6ft 6 medium light fast tip I like St. Croix, Plueger reel is one to look at. Good luck you'll get plenty of fish.
