Colors

I was wondering about color selection and how you guys choose the right color to use or at least start with? I’m talking rap’s, spinners, plastics, etc. I’ve always went with what Dad taught me which is “Bright color on bright day, dark on dark” or my wife's method " Thats pretty, I'm using that"

This could lead to some real discussion, but I think lure size, action and speed are all more important. The tuning of the lure is also very important, some run better than others at particular speeds. Always check your lure beside the boat at the speed you intend to troll to be sure it runs properly at that speed. On days when a particular bait, say an SR5, is doing well any color of that bait seems to work provided it runs properly.

I agree that color is not as important as lure shape, action and presentation, but I've had days where it seemed that color was the only thing that mattered... As far as selecting a color, it depends what kind of forage you want to imitate. For example, if I'm fishing around shallow weeds, I'll go with natural colors (red, perch, black etc) to look like crayfish or perch. I'll go shinier (silver, white, gold) to imitate other baitfish. If all else fails (or in stained water) go with an annoyingly bright color to attract some attention. This is how I usually select my initial color. From there I leave it up to the fish to determine.

One of the keys to putting it gather is color. As stated earlier sometimes that is the only thing that will catch fish is a certain color. Color selection should be choosen carefully. Like the main forage base for the body of water you are fishing. If perch is what the walleyes are chasing go with perch patterns, for shiners or shad go chromes, golds, whites. On todays market there are many different colors, so a good plce to start is ask the local bait dealer what color has been working. Look around the store to see what the store stocks. Ask some of the patrions that are in the store. Hopefully this will help.
