Spinners at night?

Recommended Posts

So a buddy and I were discussing alternative options for catching 'eyes after dark. The obvious "go-to" is either a lighted bobber or a crankbait, but does anyone fish spinners after dark??? It seemed pretty logical after bouncing around watching corks float for a while (ok, maybe we just wanted to move a bit), but I don't know why it would'nt work. And for that matter, why wouldn't a Lindy rig work, too....maybe my walleye circle isn't very large, but I don't know anyone who doesn't either pull cranks or float corks after the sun goes down.

Are we missing something?!?

I think most methods work, the go to methods you're describing are just easier to do when you can't see. I can fish jigs or rigs totally by feel, but a big part of fishing those for me is watching my line. Tough to do that in the dark. Spinners that wouldn't be near the issue, probably can't fish weedy spots in the dark though.

Before I night-fished I thought I wouldn't like it for those same reasons - I was a line watcher and wouldn't be able to see. I like to fish in the weeds. Usually with a spinner rig I can feel if there is a bit of weed hanging on. I usually have a headlight so that I can click it on briefly to see the bend in the rod. Another thing you can do is to put fluorescent or glow paint on the rod tip.

It's surprising how bright it can be out there with a little moonlight. I've even tied knots using only moonlight out there.

Yes they will work after dark whether fished deep or pulled shallow over the weeds. I like a crawler harness as it gives a bigger profile but leeches work fine too. Less perch and sunnies to deal with after dark as well.
