2 questions for my fellow fishermen?

Since I can remember helping my dad tie spinner rigs and now that I tie my own I am getting curious to see what people use out there for line to tie theirs. We always used 8lb. momno for walleye rigs and jumped up to a 18lb. or even a 20lb. mono for pike and never really had a problem with any of them. I am just looking at other ideas out there and some pointers that we may have over looked that some of you might have had in the years. And my other question is I have been noticing planer boards more and more in the last 5 years and I would like to take the step and get 2 or 4 of them. Just wondering whats the best way to go on them that you guys used and some of the ones to stay away from being this is all new to me.

I tie my harnesses with 12lb Seaguar Fluoro, mono is just fine though. Lot of guys use regular Trilene. You really want to use a heavier line as it is stiffer.

As for planer boards, I've had the opportunity to fish with alot of different setups and I really prefer Off-Shore brand boards with the Tattle Flag upgrade and the Snapper Release. The regular Off-Shore boards come with a fixed flag, you have to watch for the board to go back for a bite with a regular rigged board. With the Tattle Flag kit, the flag will flip down when you get a bite, or a weed, or a sheephead messing with your bait. Basically better bite detection. The Snapper Release is just a heck of a lot easier to use IMO, just flip the lever up to release the line.

Line Counting reels are a must when you get into planer board fishing.

You can also put a spinning reel in free spin mode and reel backwards and remember how many cranks back it is.I have done this for years and it works well.Sometimes I name spots/rockpiles/reefs by "number of cranks" when writing in the fish log for the day.c63
