I am not sure about all coleman coolers but I have one (a small one) and that cooler will not let the ice melt very easily.....I had recently been out fishing and filled the cooler on friday morning and on sunday evening I still had a good amount of ice in it...compared to my igloo cooler where I can put a bunch of ice in it and by the time I get to the lake it seems like it is melted!

I don't have any specific brand recommendations, but I do have a couple of cooler-use tips. Hopefully they're helpful to someone, even if you already know them.

1. Blocks of ice last longer than cubes of ice. (There's less surface area to mass.) You can wash out a milk jug and then fill with tap water about 2/3 to 3/4 full and freeze to create your own blocks. The drinking water you get when they melt is a bonus.

2. Leaving water to slosh around in the bottom of your cooler will melt the ice faster than keeping it dry. (Water is a more efficient thermal conductor than air.) This is another reason that the ice-filled milk jugs are nice.

3. Try to remember where things are in your cooler, and decide what you want to take out/ put back before you open the lid. Standing there with the lid open is only cooling down the outdoors. (Thanks Mom! grin)

Engel is very similar to Yeti, and costs a little less. I just couldn't justify the cost of either. Got a Coleman Xtreme 6 58-quart. Not easy to find, I ordered online from Ace hardware, free shipping for in-store pickup. Total cost under $70.00. I'm happy with it so far, but word is the hinges are pretty fragile. I'm thinking of taking one off and going to the hardware store to see if I can get a piano hinge to match.

Ron.

What he said... grin I use quart milk jugs, they work great. All I can add is I also also throw a bath towel on top of everything before I shut it. Seems to help keep that cold in.

I have several of the Extreme cooloers and they work well. Packing a cooler right is important if you want to save the ice. I always take some bubble wrap and news paper and put it over everything and then close and seal tight with duck tape. Open only when absolutely needed. Things like pop, water and snacks should go in another cooler that gets opened more often so your main meat or whatever cooler stays cold. Nothing worse that openeing that cooler over and over again.

Like said Milk Jugs frozen last a long time. I like dry ice for long trips, wrap it up good in news paper and it lasts forever as long as cooler stays closed.
