over range microwave with vent hood - external venting

The Mrs. has decided the the stove is going to move 18 inches to the right. That boogers up the connection to the range vent hood which is external. The ducting is rectangular 3.5 X 10 inches. The run that goes up through the second floor is perpendicular to the counter and so there was some pretty complicated ductwork to hook it up to the old setup.

Just to make things more interesting the current plan is to buy a microwave to hang above the stove, obviously disregarding the currently perfectly functional 4 year old microwave that sat on the old counter.

I don't think much of range hoods that don't exhaust outside. Seems like all you're doing is moving the smoke and odor from one place and shooting it back in your face. I've checked and the make microwaves withi vent hoods that go external. What I don't know is how the duct work out be set up and whether that would eat up a lot of cupboards above? Could someone give me an idea on how the vents are run and what you get it you buy the "installation kit" I saw listed on the wave HSOforum.

Mine is an older model but it vents out the top like a hood. I think the vent is rectangular.
