Wind

Seriously, I want to get out and go fishing, but this wind is killing me. I can't take my canoe out by myself in 20mph+ stuff.. I was all excited about getting out today since last night it was only predicted 5-15mph, but man are the tree tops being RIPPED today.

Anyone know when the wind is supposed to quiet down a bit?

yesterday i went out with my 8wt.. there were 15-20mph winds... surprisingly it held up and was able to cast... just had to aim about 5ft to the right of where i wanted the fly to drop... but otherwise i hear ya! i really wanna take my pontoon out.. but not when there are 12"+ waves on the lake(which are pretty big waves for this little lake)

I hate strong winds. Even Monday it was rough. Any gust would knock your boat off course and you'd spend a minute or two just getting the boat back on track. Not to mention all the casts that were fouled due to tumbling lures.

i dont go out in strong winds period. i like to have boat control as much as possible. a good "walley chop" is nice to have but not gusts 25 to 30 or more miles per hour. years ago i went out in mill lacs in big winds and cought nothing of course, i have had water spouts go near me in canada, and even got lifted up while ice fishing and dragged for a bit by a snow witch [kind of like a water spout but swirling snow instead], and brushed by strait line winds up north while camping on a island with my wife and two dogs and more.

so i have had it with strong winds, and would rather shore fish in a river or stay home and do some chores that are always needed to get done. good luck.

Guess i'm kind of the opposite of you guys. I love fishing in the wind, especially if it blows from the same direction for 2 to 3 days in a row! When the wind blows, i go find the windiest spot of the lake. My best fishing has come in 30mph wind...after it blew in that direction for 3 days - I'm always looking for that situation because it concentrates the fish. Fish windblown points and shorelines boys!

Plus...No jet ski's or pleasure boaters wink

Even if 30mph winds make the fish bite, it still causes havoc for fly fishing and makes it dangerous for the canoe frown

I doubt that even the best fisherman can catch fish well with a swamped boat and his lure buried in his forehead.

I love fishing wind too...to a certain point. saturday the north end of mille lacs was a little crazy with that strong south wind, so the drift sock had to come out. Monday, we only caught bass on the wind-blown shorelines. Yeah boat control is tough, especially when you have to multi-task between fighting a fish and taking the hooks out and keeping the boat from hitting docks! I haven't been using my fly rods as much lately though with all these windy days...the forecast only calls for more wind too! 23 mph winds tomorrow, 17 mph wind friday frown

I'm not real sure why, but this quote made me laugh a little bit. Maybe because I can see it happening to me. I didn't think today was supposed to be all that windy. Guess our weatherman was wrong again. I had the kayak prepped and ready to go too. Maybe some day this summer I'll get to go do some open water fishing. ***Crossing my fingers***

I hear ya. With 30mph wind gusts, I dont even want to attempt trailering my 14ft Lund to the lake. Lets hope this weekend will be better. I can deal with 10 to 15mph winds, but beyond that, I get tired of the wind...unless I'm fishing from the shore, then bring on the wind.
