radio--mind of its own

Nuts4Fishin

Question

I thought we installed a new radio into the boat correctly a couple of weeks ago as everything worked good in the garage. However, we were fishing this week without it on and to our surpise it just came on all by itself. It wouldn't respond to the off/on switch so the only way we could get it to shut up was to disconnect the power under the dash. Since I'm no electrican I'm wondering if any of you could give me a clue on where to look without me pulling the dash completely apart. I bought the radio brand new last fall and just got around to putting it in so that shouldn't be bad but I'm confused. Any obvious help?

So, do you think it's shot? Will it dry out and work properly in the future? Reason I'm asking is I'm taking a trip to Canada soon and I'd like it to work or worst case replace it before I go if it'll never come back to working right. Any installation tips to prevent losing another unit if I have to replace it?

It should be placed in a waterproof radio compartment to prevent damage in the future.

You can try removing it and placing the entire unit in the direct sunlight for a day. It may dry out and still be usable or it may just be junk. Depends how much water and corrosion is in it.
