I have never had any luck Morel hunting, more of a rock hound. But all you guys got me thinking I needed to get the goose out and change my luck. I had a good idea on a spot, took off a half hour early from work and took her out before dinner. I was on the look out for P.I. when I almost steped on the first batch I have actualy found on my own in my own spot. Then I hear a "Daddy look!!! I found a big one!!!!"

Turned out to be a double, nothing huge, but for someone finding them on public land I would like to think we did good.

We ended up finding about 2 dozen. Half of them were what I would say was past prime, dry and leathery, but the ones that were not will be good eating.

I will say this, any chance I can get the goose out in the woods with me is a good thing. She does not have a long attention span and I am the type who will spend all day at a task. So I have to learn when to just walk away. There were other spots that I wanted to go look, but there are other days. In the end we spent an hour on the "Mushroom Hunt", when she realized where we were she decided a rock hunt would be funner, and since she doesn't like to eat mushrooms the event lost its luster a little. So we bush-whacked to the road and she did find some small banders as well. And I got an hour and 55 min of "daddy and me" time that I wouldn't have gotten if not for you guys and your stinking mushroom pictures.

I blame you guys...... Thank you!!!

Nice!!

As long as those "past prime" ones are just dry and dont have mold on em, just split and soak em and they will come back to life and be delicious!!

I did it with my last batch from WC Ill. a couple weeks ago.

NG, welcome to the world of what is the equivalent of adult Easter egg hunting! Kids as you found can play too! wink Just yesterday I rounded up another little bunch and they were all dry as well. I just soak them for a good half hour in cold water and they suck the water back into them. I cut them in half and then freeze small dinner size zip lock bags of them. Bring a GPS with you if you start checking out areas you haven't tried before so you can find them next year. I think I have found about 2 1/2lbs of them so far this year. Have funny with the Goose! smile

I said half were begining to dry out and get leathery, I didn't say I left them behind. wink

I figured I would try soaking a couple to see if they rehydrated. If that diddn't work then I would toss them on the dehydrator and use them that way.

I had fun, I have not looked for morels since she was born, so at least 7 if not 8 years. I could definately make better time and cover more ground alone, but it was not about me yesterday. If I were alone I could focus on the shroomin and not have to spend as much time on the Poison Ivy watch. I am not alergic to it, she is. I have been thinking about other locations to look all day today though. It does give a good reason to buy a nice porter house steak. Ok, mabe just a venison loin from the freezer, but steak and mushrooms sounds good on a friday night.

Well not steak, but I just had a nice big filet of Salmon with some shrooms on top! Yuuum! smile Oh, thanks for the poison Ivy reminder! frown I just seem to run through the woods helter-skelter and never pay much attention to it. But, like you it never seems to bother me. Good luck out there this weekend! wink

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
