FBMH
How much does it cost to get an impeller changed in a motor? IF it matters, i have an 89 evinrude 25hp electric start
lumpy
My mechanic just quoted me $150 to replace the impeller. There is labor to remove the lower unit to do this.
RebelSS
That's what it cost me too, $150.
folke2000
Go back throught the posts, and just do it yourself. I am not terribly mechanical, but after doing it once, it is not that bad of a job.Good luck,Folke
hamms-scooter
Cost me the same thing and liked that the mechanic could look it over as he did the job. The water tube needed fixing and some o rings. This is kind of an important thing to have done. Heart of the motor really with out it it will cook the head.
Het
I needed mine done on my main motor, a 225 Optimax. I'm decent with a wrench so I decided to do it myself. The impeller and gaskets needed cost $22. I printed the directions off of a site, got a buddy to help, and had it done in less than an hour. It was a no brainer, and probably could have done it half smashed, if I was still a drinker. jwmiller33
just curious, how do you tell if you need to replace the impeller? are there any obvious tell tale signs?
SkunkedAgain
Yes, the motor isn't peeing. That could also be a clogged tube. A motor that smokes (from the powerhead, not the exhaust) after you shut it off is another sign.I had it done on a small motor and it was $170 or $180. delmuts
That or if it has been quite a while since it was changed! Mine is working fine, but having it changed any way. I've had the boat for five years. I figure it is cheap preventive maintenance.
Het
Usually, they 'let go' without warning. Motor can be peeing fine and running well one minute, and the next minute the overheat alarm is going off. You can either shut it down, and get towed back in, or keep going and risk blowing the motor.Optimax motors should have them changed every other season, per the owners manual. I couldn't see going over three seasons with any motor. The cost to have it done isn't that bad, but they are very easy to do in the driveway with just a couple tools.
