Bought a house and the yard is littered with it. I know how to get rid of it when it comes to the smaller stuff. What about the stuff that is bigger then your average 2.5"

Has anyone had any luck using the herbicides? This weekend I am thinking about cutting the stump down and using a brush killer on the stump. I will paint it on (non concentrated) and probably put a 5 gallon bucket over it so the sun cant hit it and make it grow.

anyone have a specific product that works better? I plan on repeating the brush killer treatments for at least 3 weeks

And no I can't get a machine in there unless the neighbor kindle lets me rip up his yard which he won't.

A couple years ago I cleared a bunch... Cut it to a stump in the fall, dug shallow around it to expose the rootbase... Whacked it a couple hundred times with a hatchet to open things up. Then had a couple of small brush pile fires over top of them.

Didn't come back in the spring.

regardless of the size, you are going to want to use an herbicide on the stumps. you want the roots to absorb the killer. if you don't you will have 5 plants growing where you cut out one.

Cut the stumps once the leaves are out and the plant is pulling lots of nutrients back in. Treat the stumps with herbicide. Only need one treatment.

Best time is in the fall, second best is after full leaf out.

I have spent several years working on buckthorn commercially as well as in my own yard. The best way still remains pulling out the entire plant, but that doesn't work after about 1.5" diameter.

FYI on dealing with the debris. I was warned by the rental company that the stuff will just wrap around and mess up a chipper. I didn't even try it. I don't know if the stuff can re-seed if you stack it up.
