Engine Squeak, 2004 Silverado

Recommended Posts

2004 Silverado, 114,000 miles. I have noticed a squeak coming from the engine when first starting up in the morning usually when it is cold out since December. Sounds like bearings going on something. This morning I tried finding it by placing a wooden dowel on the alternator and the tensioner and holding it up to my ear. It didn’t seem like it was coming from them. I didn’t get to try it on the pulley in the center may have to pull the fan shroud to get at that. Is there any other way to diagnose this?

Remove the belt and start it see if the noise is gone, if it is, you are on the right track.

And if you use something other then wood, the sound will travel through it better. A big screw driver, prybar, etc..

Remove the belt and spin everything by hand.

If nothing squeaks start the engine and make sure the noise is gone. If it is still there remove the A/C belt or see if the noise changes with the a/c on or off.

Notate the direction of the belt. When you reinstall it put it back on so that it rotates in the opposite direction. If the noise is gone its the belt.

I have a 2004 Sierra, so same difference grin.

When was the last time you replaced the belt? I know when my belts have been geting warn they seem to squeak. A lot like a pack of mice are running around under the hood.

The other issue I had which caused a squeak was the power steering pump. That would "moan" when I was cranking the wheel and it squeaked for a while starting it up for the first time.

AC unit may be another culprit.

...

Gotta love these trucks! grin
