Lead Core Rod vs. Spinning Rig Rod

Recommended Posts

I'm just getting into using lead core. Do any of you guys use the same rods (or same type) for lead core that you use for spinning rigs or is there a substantial difference in the type of rod you want for lead core?

I really like my Limit Creek Leadcore rods. 8'6" telescoping. Also the 5' "Shorties" are great for getting a nice spread out. I cant wait to get my hands on their new 12' leadcore rods so I can really reach out and touch some eyes.

The Limit Creek rods are sweet for sure. I have used them and they are great but I don't own any. I use the Cabelas "Depthmaster" rods about $35 each. I use the 5' shorties and the 8'6" planer board rods that I use for both leadcore and mono (I switch reels for mono planer board duty).

I also am using a 10'6" Salmon rod for longlining and it would make a great lindy or bobber rod as well.

Now to answer your question, lead core belongs on a larger casting reel. I don't think a spinning reel would hold up. I suppose you could put a casting reel on a spinning rod and use it that way but it does take some backbone and a flexible upper half to take the abuse and have enough power to bring in your fish.

My question really isn't about the reels. When I mentioned spinning rigs, I meant trolling spinners with planer boards and line counter reels. I've already purchased a couple Sealine 47s that I'm going to use just for the lead core. I'm just wondering if I need seperate rods or if some guys are using their planner board rods for lead core also. I was watching midwest outdoors a few weeks back and I think they were using ugly sticks for their lead core. Ugly Sticks or Cabellas Depthmaster rods are pretty inexpensive.... maybe I'll just pick some of them up.

Northlander- I don't see that 8'6" telescoping rod on their HSOforum.
