I usually change mine when it fails to spool off without much assistance. Sometimes thats every year, sometimes it's 3. I keep 6 rods in my bag and generally go through all of them during an outting, and would rather not spend $30-45 a yr. if I don't have to.

So far I've only been bit off by toothy critters with no fatigue snaps.

Of course, my advice is free, so take it for what it's worth grin

I am nearly 100% micro braids now on all my ice reels. I find it much more dependable and it will last a couple seasons easily. I shed several yards from time to time over the season and spool enough initially so I will not run low.

With mono or braids I find by using a line treatment like Ardent Line Butter greatly increases the longevity of the line and enhances it's spooling characteristics.

Sunlight is the enemy of fishing line and the Line Butter helps to protect the line from deterioration due to the suns effects.

Yearly, at most every other year…If I know I’m going to Lake of the Woods or a big trip where there is always a chance of catching a monster. I will always change the line before the trip, if it has not been done that season – Hate to lose a fish of a lifetime over crappy line!

You SHOULD change it every 3-4 times you go fishing. But really, who has the time or money for that?

Wow! That would mean that I would have to change my line every one or two weeks. Out of curiosity Steak, what logic do you base that recommendation on?
