verizon 4g phones

Recommended Posts

Well after having the original Droid for well over a year I bit the bullet and got a thunderbolt today. (Tax return present to myself)

So far I am really impressed. I really liked my original Droid but this thing knocks that right out of the water for performance. The sense stuff is a little annoying but I suppose it will be fine once I get used to it. The internet and operation speed compared to the original Droid is pretty amazing.

We will see what the 4g coverage is like but so far so good. It's definitely nice having the extra speed without having to pay extra for it. I almost feel like I'm not getting ripped off by the company. Almost. grin

Yeah I would say they could be brothers. It's supposedly has a newer processor and more RAM but Idk if that's just bunk that they were feeding me at the store. It pretty much looks identical to the EVO though.

All they feed you at the store is [PoorWordUsage] smile Just like your 4G coverage smile I will say at least you are on a solid network smile

Are you saying 4G doesn't exist?

Kind of like all those Pre-N routers everyone used to use? Because the technology wasn't certified yet does that mean that Pre-N was not real?

Maybe those N routers are really only 56K. smile

In technical terms, nope 4G isn't here, yet...

just like when I said the river floods every year, you said that's not the case, because it isn't officially recorded information and low lying areas are not considered a flood....

Ahh, here it is Dtro.

Quote:
Nick, I'm sure they are using technical terms as far as gauge height. It DOES NOT flood every year. In Jordan I think the flood stage is 25'. The time I've lived here (about 10 years) its only got above that maybe half the years or 50% (maybe not even that high).

Is 24' flooding? Sure I suppose, but not officially.

So is 4G here, Sure, But not Technically.

Ok I found this:

Pre-4G technologies such as mobile WiMAX and first-release 3G Long term evolution (LTE) have been on the market since 2006[2] and 2009[3][4][5] respectively, and are often branded as 4G. The current versions of these technologies did not fulfill the original ITU-R requirements of data rates approximately up to 1 Gbit/s for 4G systems. Marketing materials use 4G as a description for Mobile-WiMAX and LTE in their current forms.

So is LTE and WiMax faster than 3G? I would say it probably is...

Dan and I had this thread convo a while back. I can go search the threads unless it got deleted. Yes 4G is being marketed and used, but it is NOT up to the technical standards.

I never said the "4G" they are using isn't faster, I said the real 4G isn't even here yet.

Congrats on the new Thunderbolt LTE phone and thanks for the review deadeye.

While Verizon might tell you it's 4G, I guess technically that is not true. I'm sure it is much faster than previous technology such as EDGE or 3G, but sadly it might not meet the requirements of 4G. You might want to return it because ulitmately it will probably be too slow for you. Best wait until all phones are 4G compliant. By then they might be branding phones at 5G though. wink

"How many bloody G's are there". LOL grin

Oh its way faster than 3g. That much I do know.

I don't care what they call it 3g 3.5g 4g LTE Wimax pistachio pudding whatever. It's better than what I had and it has so far worked everywhere I have been which is better than my buddy's EVO did. Plus I don't have to pay an extra 10$ a month.

So...its a win for me grin

Oh ya and thank you dtro. It's been fun so far. I don't really have a lot of exciting stuff ie xbox Wii big tv ect so this is my main form of electronic entertainment. It is really nice to be sitting on the bank of the river listening to Pandora and looking at this site.

Is your wi-fi turned on?

I would assume so seeing as though I believe he exceeded the current incantation of LTEs theoretical limit.

Edit: Maybe I was wrong, but apparently it depends heavily on the channels available to it at the time. Most people won't get anything near that fast, particularly when the network gets loaded.

To put that in perspective I just did the same test on my original droid (I gave it to my mom as its a huge upgrade for her) and its at .64 mbps download and at .57 upload.

Idk what "G" you classify 19mbps I got on the new phone but I call it pretty freakin sweet compared to the old one.

    • Power output is:  amps x volts = watts   If your charger is pushing 10amp at 12 volt: 12 x 10 = 120 watts.  2 banks = 240 watts.   240 watts / 120v at your outlet = 2 amp.   Efficiency isn't 100% so it's gonna be more than 2 amp on your garage circuit, but maybe like 2.4 amps.     I think.... It's been a while, LOL.  Either way 20amps output on a charger for a 12v battery isn't the same as pulling 20amps off your garage circuit.
    • Wanderer, thank you. I did look at the breakers for my garage/outside outlets and they are 20 amp.  I reached out to the company that makes dual pro chargers with the question and this is the reply I received.:     Thank you for reaching out to us here at PCS. The Sportsman series charger, although rated ay 10 amps per bank, draws only 5 amps from AC when all banks are charging. As the Professional series which provides 15 amps per bank, has a maximum AC draw of 7.5 amps with all banks charging.
    • That’s an interesting point.  While I understand how Amps work, I can’t say I’m fully versed in the draw of modern on board chargers.   By modern code, outdoor and outbuilding outlets should be 20 Amp.  If your outside or garage outlets are 15 Amp, they’re undersized.  But that is quite possible if the garage was built before that code became enforced.   With heavy use, you may not be able to keep up on daily charging without the 10 Amp per channel charger, however that’s with very aggressive use for consecutive days.  On our June muskie trip we run up to 15 hours a day for up to 7 days on a 24V Ulterra and by mid week we’re starting to see the batteries not reach full charge.  That’s a lot of bank running at nearly 2 mph on windy shores.   We charge at a dock with up to 6 boats per dock plugged in - some with 36 volt systems.  Now I’m not sure if all the outlets are on a dedicated circuit but I’m betting they aren’t.  But they’re all 20A outlets with a lot of draw on them.  At max draw, they’re not keeping up but also not tripping the breakers.   What I’m saying, without a technical review is: you’re probably fine either way.  You probably won’t tax your batteries so much that they can’t recover on a 5 Amp per channel overnight charge and a 10Amp per channel charger probably won’t be too much to plug into your 15A outlet - if it really is a 15A.  If you’re sure, you’re sure, but I would double check if you’re not 100%.
