I be hard pressed to not bring to vexi, I even make sure I have an extra battery and the camera along just in case the flasher goes down. I dont use the gps to much but it has found me and told me I'm going the wrong direction on a foggy morning in the boat. As for the power auger I could prolly go with out till the ice gets 12 plus inches. trolling on ice with a handy would be tough....

technology helps everyone, thus everyone with technology helps everyone with out technology, if I see someone hand augering I will offer a few holes with the gasser

Now from a different point of view, I am a 64 year old gal who loves ice fishing. Would I be out there if it were old school...no. All of the modern technology has made it easy for me to go by myself as my husband has severe health problems and can't go. I started ice fishing around 15 years ago, didn't really start using a portable until 4 years ago and stayed in my first ice "shack" 3 years ago. I hope to be still running my auger and fishing when I am 74. I just bought my first vex 4 years ago and this year upgraded to the Ice 55 and I am loving it. laugh

This question could be asked about soft water fishing also. Anybody want to go back to the 12 ft Lund with the bench seats and the 9.9 hp Johnson with the minnow pail hanging over the edge? Works good on Basswood! smile

Some of my best fishing memories came out of a Lund with bench seating, a minnow bucket on a rope and the metal mesh fish basket full of bull gills and slab crappies. In fact I still have the 9.9 Johnson sitting on the duck boat. To an extent we all rely on bigger and better things while fishing. It's part of who we are, we constantly strive to be better or have better. But you know what? It's still fun to bring out the old Zebco 33 and push that big button and let that bobber and hook fly.

I have the electronics on my boat but when I go to the in laws cabin and take the kids out on the pontoon with no graph, trolling motor or livewell and still have a blast catching fish by relying on what my Dad taught me and what my Grandpa taught my Dad and what I am teaching my son now. It's so much more satisfying knowing that we can and do catch fish without all the toys...

I wish I could even UPGRADE to that. My boat consists of a chair on shore.

I'm not sure I would go back. Since I was 20 I had had a power auger (still have 20 years later), so I have been spoiled that way for a long time. I fondly remember drilling 20 holes to drop the bomb and see if I was on the right spot that I had marked from shore. Then setting 2 jig sticks 6" off the bottom and hoped the fish were there. Caught many nice fish in those days. Today, like most, I find the spot from a chip in my gps, I am glued to my vexi and drop a spoon down with a 9 ball bearing reel and graphite rod while sitting on a padded stool on a easy pulling sled pulled by an electric start snowmobile. Althogh I do enjoy that better, there have been a few times over the years when all that technology wasn't producing, that I would go to another spot, far away from where a lakmaster chip says the fish should be, drill 2 holes and put 2 jigsticks down with plain hooks or jig a bits. It has turned a few unproductive days into fresh walleye dinner.

I still fish outa the 12 ft alumnicraft with a 9.9 johnson. I dont mind the old school ice fishing either. The only thing I do not like about it is getting through the ice. I still fish alot with the bare essentials....couple tip ups, auger, and bait. even on cold days. Get up off your A** and run around a little bit if your cold

I'm not all that far removed from the old days, I guess. Compared to most I am still in the dark ages (both hard water and soft). I own few luxury items, but if I didn't have them tomorrow I would still go fishing anyway.

I take a certain amount of comfort in not getting caught up in the restlessness of always trying to have the newest gadgets. That's not just in fishing either but across the board.

..back in 2011 they didn't have laser beam augers, virtual fishing finding see through the ice goggles, hover portables, and wireless cameras in their jigs. How did they do it?? gringrin

I have a laser auger, just not the right kind grin

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
