Ice House Runners Replacement

EJW

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We need to replace the wood runners on our ice house. It is 8 x 12 and located north of Isle, near Mille Lacs. We will do the installation ourselves. Any information would be helpful.

Treated wood vs oak wood vs steel????

Where to buy materials????????? Cost???

ETC..

Thanks

EJW

I don't know if you could find an old pair of skis big enough or strong enough to support an 8'x12' house wink.gif

What sources could you recommend to find 3/8" plastic to cover the bottom of the skids? I'm just about ready to start constructing my house. I was tentatively planning on wrapping the bottom of the runners with valley flashing. I've seen a few houses on LOW with this done and it looked pretty slick. Anyone have experience with it? Pros or Cons?

You can buy sheets of teflon coated plastic that fit in the back of trucks to make the load slide easier. Very heavy and very durable. Not sure how they hold up in cold temperatures though. Call a trucking supply place, they should have them!

There is a little lumber supply place on the east side of Mille Lacs across the street from Johnson's Portside Gas and Bait that has timbers for sale. Not sure how much they are though. My house needs a new set as well.

EJW, we replaced the runners on our 8 X 8, a few years ago with treated 5" X 6" wood runners, after a little use we noticed the ice was starting to peel off the runners so we bought and installed 3/8" plastic to cover the bottom of the runner. Do not recall what the cost was. Good luck.
