Leaving fish on the ice and going home?

I guess I don't get the mentality of only catching 2 attempting to keep them and changing your mind and throwing them in hole or leaving them on the ice. This probably isn't the case for everyone doing this but to me those 2 added with the last 2 and the next 2 and so on eventually gets me to a meal. If I really didn't want to clean them I usually can find another fisherperson on the ice that doesn't mind adding my 2 to their pile.

Ha ha, I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here on this site as the the types that read these forums are the minority ethical sportsmen.

I can't believe people even do that! I haven't seen anyone do that around here. It could be because we don't have the problem with swim bladders here in southern mn. Fish always seem to be successfully realsed with out any problems. I think it helps that the deepest lake within an hour is 20 feet deep and most of the others lakes range between 4 and 15 at there deepest. Its hard to have a problem like that when it isn't very deep.

Another reason I haven't seen this could be that us anglers in southern mn have more ethics and don't waste our resources. Or maybe we just suck at fishing. grin

Isn't it illegal though? I thought there was a wonton waste law in the dnr regs that prohibited this type of behavior. Last time I went out I caught one crappie within 3 minutes of getting my line down and it was large enough to keep so I threw it on the ice. 1.5 hours later no more fish up the hole. Cleaned one fish that night cause I figured I didn't have any other choice and I don't mind adding one more to the freezer for a fish fry.

Yes, it is illegal. It is in the regulations.

As is leaving fish of any species on the ice. Just because you perceive them as an undesirable species.

This really ticks me off when I see it too. I'm not shy about pointing it out and educating them of the potential consequences of there actions either. mad

I was out on Big marine a couple weeks ago and a Bald Eaagle kept flying down to the ice and flying off. He did it two or three times, only 20 yards from me. I walked over to see what it was and found ~10 little sunnies laying there.

At least the eagle got a meal out of them instead of them just rotting. Still irritating, though.
