What knot for FireLine to a spoon or ring?

I picked up a new rod/reel combo for my fishing trip this weekend. I decided to give fireline fused micro ice crystal a try. I've never used any sort of 'superline' before. I followed the recommendations in the instructions to tie a mono leader to the spool to prevent slippage of the fireline around the spool. They recommend using a palomar knot for tackle which is knot I've never used (been a trilene knot guy for years). Anyway I can see how the palomar know will work on jigs and plain hooks but I'm not sure how to use this knot on spoons or rings. Any ideas?

palomer knot is awesome. i've been a improved clinch knot guy myself, but lately have been preferring the palomer knot. one advantage of it is you don't need a knot at the end to prevent slippage and the clinch knot will slip a bit with use. Then you can clip very close to the knot and not have hanging line.

For spoons I'd use a ring if you can, to avoid any chance of the edge of the spoon eyehole in tearing the line a bit, especially with the movement involved with those.

The only thing I hate about split rings, is if you aren't careful they tend to have the knot tighten in the gap where there is only one ring. I like to have it tighten around the whole two strips of metal that make the ring. Just makes me feel more secure. I thought I remember seeing somewhere a long time ago there were split rings that did overlay enough to not have that single gap. I hope that is clear!

Spoons and cranks you can tie superline straight to lure. but for jigs and hooks i like to use a fluoro leader with uni-uni knot. I'm now leaning to using a small swivel to tie the leader to now, as the uni-uni knot will give with repeat usage. Lost enough raps to big bass at the hookset, so i'm changing my style

I like superlines and almost always use the Palomar knot except when it just can't be done. I have found that if you don't want to use some mono backing, you can use some masking tape in the bottom of your spool to prevent slippage.

I too gave the fireline fused micro ice crystal a whirl this year. My first time out I set the hook I lost a fish using the trileen knot. I inspected the line upon pulling it up and it came untied. From there I went to the Palomar knot and haven't lost a lure all season since. I love the line but it takes a little getting used to. First thing I noticed was the hook set. Tone it down, since the line doesn't stretch like mono. Make sure you add a something sticky to your spool before you put the line on. The line slips on the spool, so add a small piece of looped duct tape under the line and problem solved. I think you'll like the line once you get used to it.

Pretty much any knot you now use on mono line, may also used on braids. Just do a double loop through the eye of whatever your tie to, and it will no slip.

The Palomar Knot is a 98% breakage strength knot, and a wise choice to snaps and swivels.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
