ICE HOGGER

Crappyfisherman

Recommended Posts

Just ordered a Icehogger for my Nils 8".Didn't think of this when I orderd it.

#1.How durable is it, will it crack if you set anything on it in the back of a pickup?

#2.Has anybody come up with a auger rack that will hold these other than the Otter tube.

#3.Any good or bad I should know about.

Thanks Dan

I've been using mine for a couple of months now. Here is what I've found.

1. It leaves the hole 95% clean. There are some shavings that still fall or are left in, but it leaves it clean enough to follow behind and fish each hole without scooping. I haven't been able to find a technique yet though that will leave the hole completely clean.

2. Every other trip or so, you will need to cinch down the straps as they will loosen a bit from vibration. No big deal.

3. It takes a little getting used to for carrying it around. I've found that the slush chute hole makes a nice handle.

4. On really cold days (like today) the slush will build up at the very top of shroud (inside). It won't affect performance, but will add some weight.

5. The plastic seems very durable and flexible. Unless you are dropping stuff on top from a distance I can't see it breaking just by setting stuff on top.

6. I think the otter tube might be a good option for carrying it around on a sled or ATV.

Haven't tried the spray oil trick, but honestly the build up has been minimal and if it was too bad, I just brought the auger inside at the end of the day to thaw.

I made my own cover out of a magnets a couple of years ago so I cannot comment one way or another on that.

I know Surface Tension isn't really fond of them because they end up magnetizing the blades and when he sharpens them the filings are attracted to the blade. But from a user standpoint, I love the magnets. I don't have to fuss with the bungies anymore and the magnets I used are pretty darn strong. If you do a search on YouTube, I have a video showing how I did it.

The Hogger is flexible and seems durable to me.

Would it break if it was struck hard? Maybe but think you'd have to be trying to break it.

I hang onto the discharge hole or the straps when I carry it around.

I don't have any problems with ice getting caught above, maybe I have the discharge hole a little lower.

For now I just bungie it to the rack of my ATV and snowmobile.

I might make some type of mount for it but yes the Otter Tube would work well not to mention the added protection for the blade.

My concern would be the magnets coming in contact with the edge of the blade and damaging it.

Wait, that isn't a problem for me. smile

Hey if you be careful go for it, maybe put duct tape or tool dip over the magnet.

The magnets magnetize the blade so filings stick to the edge when being sharpened but I can work around that.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
