KIWANIS LAST CHANCE ICE FISHING CONTEST

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys for all volunteering to drill holes again for us. We really only need 10 people to drill holes (same as last year) and we will again give one free ticket to 10 guys and you buy one. Last year one of our members paid for your breakfast bill and I didn't check with him if he is doing that again this year. See all Saturday. Thanks again.

Thanks for the update Agent Andy. Introduce yourself to me on Sat morning will ya? I would like to put a face to the name.

Sorry Tonyvats looks like your son and yourself arent needed to drill holes this year but thanks for the attempt. I hope you still come and fish with us. See everyone on Saturday.

Sorry I won't be there to defend my "I almost won this dang thing" title. Good luck to all the FM'ers fishing. Hope you have a GREAT day for fishing. Is this one of those need not be present to win contests? I might chance something and buy a ticket if that's the case. You never know what year the prizes won't all be filled.

Ok all drillers meet at Eagles Nest at 8am tomorrow. We will have breakfast and discuss our plan of attack as well as getting tickets filled out etc. Then we will head over to the fishing area and pop holes until we run out of room.

Frank get your butt up there and fish man!

Sold mine 3 seconds after I won it. Probably would have won another one if I would have used my second ticket more wisely. Oh well what would I do with a auger or more fishing gear anyways.

It was fun even though it was very cold.

To any Kiwanis members. I think if its below 10 degrees you should allow shelters. They wouldnt be allowed to be set up until 5 minutes before fishing time. I believe thats why there were so few people yesterday. People werent going to sit out in the open in 10 below weather.

Agent Andy or anyone else who has questions on how to do this can e-mail me. I also have some questions about next years drill team.

diggerodell,

Thanks for allowing my wife and myself the opportunity to volunteer for the drill team. We know the efforts of the Cloquet Kiwanis will help many people. Congrats also on your first post on HSO I look forward to hearing more from you. We also look forward to being a part of the last chance event next year.

hunterlaker,

Very happy to lend you the use of my spare LX3. I've seen it many times while fishing with the HSO crew. People will bend over backwards to help each other out if we have something to spare.

Sorry for the late response, I left early Sunday am for a week of fishing lake trout in Canada(had great fishing). Thanks to all that helped out drilling holes and to everyone that fished. Thanks for the suggestions for next year, they will go in my notes for the 2012 contest. If anyone wants to call me to discuss how to make the contest better, please feel free to call me at my office. The # is 879-4581.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
