WI and MN laws regarding distance between shacks?

Well, let me be clear when I say that everyone should look for their own fishing spot AT LEAST 10' from anyone else. But, I also have to say that IF someone invades your spot be nice and state what you feel they have done. I believe anyone on this forum can read other peoples reactions for experience. If someone is within that 10' range, simply walk away and call the DNR, if its a big deal to you. Me, I dont care and have been aproached by many people asking if i was catching anything, I always tell the truth and get a kick out of watching others catch crappies next to me.

They always are polite and say what a great person I am to share and how happy they are, but truth be told, its them who make me happy.

Now I have a friend that just started ice fishing. I certainly hope that none of us have gotten so full of ourselves that we cannot recongnize someone that needs our help and someone just being an [badWordUsage] looking to make a dumb point. There is a difference.

It's the point of the concern with the 10' law based on safety on the ice? To reduce the risk of structures being too close and overburdening the integrity of the ice or causing melt down upon another structure with it's reflexivity upon the ice?

I was under the impression it was solely a ice safety issue, and the rest of the proximity concerns was a point of manners and decorum amongst fisherman to sort out on there own.

Probably because they weren't fishing next to anyone when they set up. They were fishing next to an empty shack.

The presence of a plywood box left unoccupied on the ice is not a claim to ownership of the area. I don't have any interest in setting up close to an empty fish house, but if I did, I wouldn't be in the wrong. The guy who thinks he owns the structure under him whether he's there or not would.

Im kinda lost here by some of the posts...The original post stated the guy parked closer then 10 ft but I didnt see any one state that he was fishing within 10 ft of this permanant house and thats where the 10 ft law comes into play ,,,Permanent shelters have been around a lot longer then portables so outlawing them probably wont happen ,,,,In my experience the wheel houses get moved frequently but a lot of skid houses are placed for the season and only get moved to get on the ice and off the ice at the end of the season ,,,I dont see many people with permies complaining that another permy set up too close to them ,,,Its always been the guys with portables ,,,the guys with portables get a longer season as they can get on the ice earlier and can fish longer after the permies have to be taken off the ice ,,,each one has advantages ,,,Get over it or get one of each

The problem my cousin had was with the gentlemen parking his truck so close that he couldn't even swing the shack door open all the way, without hitting the guys truck with it. Remember how you feel when parking at a parking lot and the guy next to you parks so close, you can't open your door? Now, you're on a huge frozen lake, and that same jackwagon decides to block you in. I really don't see how, empty or not, anyone should be able to park anywhere near that close. It seems to me, the a-hole did it intentionally, as it would take some skillful parking to get that close to the shack.

Im lost to how any one thinks its cool or "right" to park their house or their vehicle that close. for any reason. Is that the person is on "your" spot. seriously there's a lot of lakes and a lot of space on those lakes. if there's already someone there permanent portable or whatever you don't have to sit right on top of them. fish have this wonderful ability its called swimming they don't just float under a single spot they move around. If i pull on a lake the last place i'm going is where someone is already sitting. I'm sorry but if you park right on top of somebody your a jack hole.

I was going to add to my post but cant find the "edit" option

Its not a perm vs portable issue or about your means of travel on the ice ,,,,Its about the "additude' of the some of the people out there fishing ,,,there is not test to check a persons additude when buying a fishing licence ,,,,So the people out there with the "its all about me" mentality are going to be on the lakes

The people with the "its all about me" attitude should be messed with. I have no problem being a (insert insult) to someone who has no courtesy. I have bit my lip for people being (insert insult) that when I run into it now the gloves are already off.

Seems a little far fetched. Are you sure your cousin wasn't embellishing the story a little for dramatic effect? So he cant open the door.... So the truck was parked within 2 feet of the shack? Is this shack banked at all? Was he parked up on the bank? I'd love to see a picture of this parking job and hire the guy if he has this kind of tight space ability. Maybe he can drive a fork lift for me.

Seems to me, your the one with the attitude. Big talk, but what you never know what the other guy is capable of. He might be 6'6", 280. Or he might be packing heat. Still want to mess with him and pop holes all the way around him? He might be the local sheriff. Still want to pop holes all around him? I'm sure he can find something to ticket you with or charge you with. If your such a grown up, maybe you should just move on and forget about it.

normaly its just really loud music or constantly drilling holes i dont plan on fishing. However I normaly look for new spots to get away from people and I only mess with the ones that insist on fishing ontop of the guy that is way off by himself.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
