Got another Gray!

Recommended Posts

I had a little time tonight after work to sneek out for a couple sets and managed to pull one in.

1st and 3rd sets were duds but I managed to get this female to come in for a fly by. Missed her with the first shot and winged her with the second. Not real proud of the shot and had to track her a little ways but recovered it anyway.

Hi Gray,

I am not sure if you have covered this or not at some point, but are you using e-callers most the time? I'm not sure what the ediquette is with preditor hunters in asking how you call. Is it something that most guys keep close to the vest or do guys share information about what works for them. I do pretty well at calling game with mouth calls (turkeys, elk, ducks, geese)but i'm not sure that is the way to go with preditors. If you can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it, you obviosely have a handle on it.

Thanks,

I got a electronic caller, place the speaker 60 to 90ft away from me. At the same time I can use another call, or disconnect the wire to the remote speak. I have the main unit with me, using both to draw them in closer. Thinking of using my bow for hunt yotes.

Muskie456,

Sorry I haven't responded to you earlier. When I'm calling Gray fox, I strictly use my FX3 and leave the call on. I'll turn the volume up and down for the duration of the set. Typically 10-20 min. on and when calling for coyotes and an occasional red, I'll start with a distress call and use that in short 1 min. on, 2 min.. off. for about 6 times. Then throw in some howls with my mouth howler, followed by 5- 10 minutes of silence. Then usually switch back to distress then some more howls. There's no exact science to it just try a few things and try to make a mental note as to what worked and try to replicate it if you can but there's no guarantee that the next set will turn out the same way. As you know with calling turkeys, it seems that no two sets are the same. Sometimes they come running in with a few soft purrs, sometimes it's aggressive cutting, sometimes a decoy brings them in and other times they see it, hang up then head the opposite direction. Mouth calls can work as well. Just use what's in your budget. Try a few different things and good luck too ya.
