Always remember to be safe out there.

Don’t forget to mark your holes and remove any ice blocks from the top of the ice.

From another thread.

A few years back out on a local lake in early March, I found an unmarked open spearing hole with the front end of my truck. Broke alot of parts and needed a wrecker. Fortunately, my insurance paid for the truck and my medical paid for broken cheek bone. There was just enough of a snow dusting to cover the 1/2 of ice in the hole. Good thing I was going slow.

Not sure what someone was doing darkhouse spearing in early March when the season closed on the 15th back then... but we do need to do our part to make sure that things like this do not happen.

merk early march bud season ended 28th most feb. so early march aint that hard to stretch, just sucks that happened wish people would be more careful, it may be a pain to go get sticks sometimes but overall its worth it and thats reflects on all spear guys. I have heard some guys call cracks in the ice spear holes before to but either way I agree with you completely merk MARK YOUR HOLES!

As long as were talking saftey remember that the ice is still never 100% safe no matter what the thickness is and just because your "up North" doesnt mean your totally safe either as there have been numerous ice rescues around the Bemidji area lately.

STAY SAFE AND HAVE FUN
