Any rules on early/late drilling?

I'm just wondering if there are any rules/laws on drilling at night or early morning? Augers can get pretty loud, i don't want to be waking folks up at 5 in the morning. Whenever i get out early i try to point my exhaust in the opposite direction of the houses nearby. thanks -moe

Very considerate of you. Noise restrictions, Hmmmmm, I wonder of the jurisdiction a city can have over the water a residence and streets are one thing on the other hand does the city own or control a body of water. In some cases maybe but I believe its not the norm. Interesting question and look forward to other views on this.

yeah i get out early alot, since i work the night shift... and on the croix this year i usually point my exhaust to the WI side if im on the MN side but even if i was on the WI side i might just point it towards them for the hell of it.. cool

I live on a lake and imo, normal lake noise (augers, boats, shotguns, wildlife) is just part of the deal. I personally would not worry about it. During the winter, most houses won't hear much since their windows are all closed. But it it nice to see that there are people out there that are considerate enough to ask.

I personally love the sound of augers ripping into the ice ... music to my ears. However if someone has their radio blasting then that is a different story mad .

Worse thing for me is during duck hunting season ... never fails shotguns going off always wake me up. Most outboards running around early in the morning/late at night during the summer are actually worse than your auger since we often have our windows open in the summer. Gotta love it when the local bass fishing club has an early start ... nothing like the sound of 20 bass boats with their 250HP 2-strokes roaring full throttle to get to the prime spots first at 6am. Again, music to my ears grin

If the muffler is pointing towards you, your body will buffer a bit of the sound...but you will get the exhaust stink too.

A hand auger is an obvious option, if you really wished to keep it down..or an electric auger.

It's very considerate of you to be concerned.

I think as long as you are not very close to a residence, the noise would be nominal if you direct it away from them.

They're even better IMO ... no fumes to deal with. The only drawback is the number of holes you can drill without a charge - still nothing to worry about for most folks. I'm sure Ed or someone else can give you more details, but ANY power auger will make things much easier for you after the ice gets thick.

A hand auger when there is a foot and a half of ice is less than ideal to me. Are the electric augers as good as the gas ones?

You can do 25 - 35 holes easy between charges, more if the ice is thinner. Charge on the go too, off the rig or the ATV, power off them too if you wish for unlimited drilling time. With a portable "Jump Power Pack" to plug into, you can do 3 times as many holes in a day.

I went to the StrikeMaster EL-12000 DB so I can run cleaner/Greener, lighter, and quieter.

good point nclaker on the hunting thing. i had it once when a neighbor called the cops because their horses went bonkers because we were hammerin on some geese and the cop walked out and said your more than 500' away so have a nice day and left. i know its not augers runnin on a metro lake but it kinda gives me an idea as to what the answer to the question would be.

+1 on the whole idea that an auger is just normal noise.

The big thing to consider here for me is think about when you're on the ice and someone starts drilling a few hundred feet away from you. IMO you can barely hear that...so when you're 500+ feet from a home and they have their windows closed up, doors closed up, furnaces running, etc...chances are that MOST times, they can't hear it and if they do, it sounds like a low hum kinda like a lawn mower. Moe,

My guess is you're alright legally. You can find out if the city your in hase a noise restriction and what it might be by calling or emailing them. Normally you'll see a rating of X decibles @ X feet as a maximum during the "quiet time" (i.e. 40Dba @ 200 feet). Then you'll have to figure out your auger's decible output.

I think you're doing the right thing by pointing it away from the houses and should be fine.

Good luck!

I'v never herd of noise ordenance laws actually limmiting anything on the water, liquid or frozen. If they did you could never start an outboard motor in the morning let alone put the boat on plane. An auger is pretty quiet compared to an outboard, unless it's an old Jiffy with a bad muffler.

After reading some of the other posts, it occurred to me ... When I am drilling holes during prime hours in the morning or early evening, I am more concerned about spooking the bite of fellow ice fisherman that took the time to setup before peak hours than I am being too noisy for the local residence.

Can be a little annoying when you are on a hot bite and then someone sets up not only too close but is making all sorts of noise and drilling holes all around you spooking the fish.

And for those thinking about pointing the exhaust at you to help reduce the noise, I would not recommend it. That hot muffler will ruin a $100-150 jacket/bibs in a hurry if you even slightly brush up against it.

Just to answer your question/thought

All Police Officers, Sheriffs Deputies, Conservation Officers, and State Troopers are licensed under the MN POST Board. "Jurisdictions" are basically City limits vs County lines etc.. but they do not prohibit ANY Officer, Deputy, Warden, or Trooper from enforcing State Law or City Ordinances anywhere in the state of MN.

All licensed peace officers have the ability to enforce the law anywhere in the state at anytime.

I sincerely doubt that this would become an issue for an early morning ice auger situation. It is nice of you to consider that though. I use an Ice gator... so my sounds are almost limited to the excited heartbeat I am drumming knowing I am about to drop a line grin

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
