Gerber Bear Grylls Fixed-Blade Knife

Does anyone own or have any experience with this knife? It sure seems useful. just looking for some opinions. The only place i can find it is at the big C in Owatonna.

I love knives, while I've never seen this knife in person, I have looked up reviews of it and looked at it on youtube. It seems an interesting piece. I don't own a fixed blade knife because I am not usually anywhere where I can carry it. My first fixed blade will be an Izula rat, because I like the simplicity and the small size of it.

The bear grills knife is a simple fixed drop point knife that is half serrated. The interesting parts are more the fact that it can be used as a hammer, has a whistle in it. It also comes with a "fire-starting ferrocerium rod" and a sharpener also. It is billed as a survival knife, but have you ever seen an episode where he uses this knife? I've seen him use a Gerber Gator, know he is a fan of the Buck Iceman, and in the later season it seems to me like he starts carrying many custom knives. The gerber bear grills knife is not his first knife. He also had one that went on a limited run for about $700.

Its on backorder right now because it is the top selling knife I believe. According to the reviews it seems like the sheath isn't the best. I wouldn't buy one for myself but would take a gift of one.

In my eyes Gerber as a company isn't what it was many years ago (before I was even born), they are still quality knives but they do not always use the best steel, and have some quality issues. But then again I have had some of my more expensive knives rust while sitting in my drawer, while the cheap $10 Gerber Paraframe is just fine right next to them. You can get a better knife for $60.

I probably said more than you were asking me to, but I gave my opinions on the knife and the company it is made by.

WO this knife is way over priced. I am a big knife guy and all the extra stuff on this knife is fluff, like CRM said above me there is a good reason bear does not carry this knife himself. I also find it very funny that this is one of the first products bear has endorsed. he has been hiking and jumping and sleeping in the woods for what 5 years? I have never seen him mention his "kit".

If your looking for spend 60 bucks on a good outdoors knife please don't waste your money on this one without first looking into other brands CRKT and cold steel are two that come to mind.

Gerber makes OK knives but for 60 bucks you can get a very high quality knife..

I am not going to get into all the reasons why your money is better spend else were on this forum but you might want to hit up the "patrolling with Sean Kennedy" web site for tons of opinions on this kind of stuff.

I'm betting it is real handy for digging grubs out of rotting wood to get that extra little "protein" in your diet.

CRKT is a good knife brand. I have 3 right now, probably sending one off to a friend just because I just got a Spyderco Delica 4 :-). Of the other two, I have a Jordan 7, and a random knife. CRKT's are built to last. The blades in general are thick and they are meant to be used.

You cannot go wrong with a Kershaw. Most are made in America, and they are good knives. Sog seal pups are excellent knives.

What exactly do you want to do with this knife?

I get most of my knives off of HSO-Classifieds or sierra trading post. There is no reason to buy knives at msrp. Try looking on there for a replacement. Or just keep looking for your old one.

Yeah, MSRP is ridiculous. I've gotten some nice deals off of steepandcheap.com. In fact, I have a new one on the way. But I still hope the one I lost turns up--it was simply awesome!

Ok I'll admit it when I was about 11 I saved up for this one and secretly clipped the ad in the parade magazine. Rushed out to the mail box everyday waiting for the ultimate knife. I couldn't wait to show my dad the fabulous knife I bought so when the mail man finally handed me the package I rushed to open it in the bottom of the road ditch. Inside was the biggest piece of [PoorWordUsage] ever I felt like I'd just been kicked by rambo. I took a detour on the way to the house to hide it in the trees so as not to have to admit what a piece of [PoorWordUsage] I'd bought. The next day when I didn't go to the mail box I was busted. Mom says OK what did you get in the mail. I had to go get my prize for all to see. She laughed, and was propable expecing to see worse, after seeing it was duller than any of our butter knives said ok you can take it outside to play.

Did you guys see the preview for the new episodes of man vs wild? The one where he makes a wet suit out of a dead seal? He pulls out the bear grills survival knife and makes a cut with this knife in the commercial

I saw that preview... He is the least favorite of the survival guys but I can't stop watching him. Be interesting to see if he just uses that knife or if he plugs it too while using it.

I ordered this knife off another online site and got it for $49.

Last weekend was the first day out with it and I was very impressed. I cut a few branches hit the pommel on some rocks and the knife held up well and kept a nice edge.

Oh and the the sparks the flint produces will burn a hole in your shirt if your not carful. After the first attempt I was able to lite a fire in the woods only with tinder I found with no problem.
