Lake Trout?

@leech~~

Yeah, I know it's a haul up to Grindstone (though I didn't know QUITE how far til I looked at a map!) but I will drive any reasonable distance - and some unreasonable distances - to learn more about fishing. It's a lot closer than my drive to Savant Lake, ON where I go to fish lakers/walleye once a year in the summer smile

I have a cousin and his family coming up to fish the same weekend as the GTG on Grindstone, but I'd be happy to meet up with some folks another weekend up thataway. Til then, I'll maybe see about a trip to Big Trout...that lake's a LOT closer wink

And Feb 12th is the Northshore sledding trail ride GTG so that's out for me as well. How does the last Sat or Sunday of the month work 1/29th or 30th for meeting at Grindstone for a little bait wetting? confused

I just might plan on making this trip. Close enough that I could skoot if need be.

Sleds/ATV or trucks? Never done the lake trout thing. Might be neat to try. After looking at Leech's avatar one like that would be neat.

I would suggest sled or wheeler if the snow isn't to deep. Some years Grindstone doesn't make the thickest ice. I think it maybe pretty hard to find a Laker like the one in my Avatar in that lake however. If you could I wouldn't be driving all the way to Ely this weekend! wink thatoneguy, your Walleye rods and lures should work fine but make sure you have a reel that can hold a go 100' feet of line on it or more. The 29th works well for me, but KG243 could you fish longer then 3:00pm if we went on the 30th?

i have posted on the grindstone thread on this as well. 29th or 30th is ok with me. whatever day works out the best for you guys. if mabr gets bored i can put him on some sunnies grin then he wont have to scoot. there was a earlier poster who said there was 16 in of ice on there a couple of weeks ago. i will go there next week and find out more. i will probably start shallow for rainbows and pike and then move out to deeper structure in the afternoon. good luck.

reinhard1, since KG243 says that he has to work both days and would have to leave early lets just plan for Sat, the 29th. Thanks for prefishing the lake. It will make it easier for the rest of us! You will be the Guide! grin

ok, then it's the 29th. me a guide? whatch out steve foss. one time in early march i'm trying for crappies and rainbows near the red barn with little to show for it and here comes this young man driving from accross the lake and he stops by me to ask how i'm doing. i told him one rainbow so far its been slow. he shows me 6 10 to 12 inch crappies and two lake trout around 18 in. i asked where did you get those. he said in 100ft of water 30 ft. down. then he says man this is a great lake and my second time to ever fish it. moral of story, you never stop learning. it was that day after many years of fishing grindstone we became addicted to the deeper water, seeing the smelt line suspended and fishing near that line. i once caught a 12lb. northern in 80ft deep and 25 feet suspended. just never know what you get. good luck.

one thing i will do this year is fish the grind after dark. especialy in march when the crappies move in the shallower water and around the cribs. i also want to fish the deep water after dark to see what's suspended. i think i have a better chance for a brown in low light. over the years i have cought some browns up to 5 lbs. in 10ft of water on live shinners on a tip up. the last two years i have not cought a brown on hard water. i have fished this lake since the early 70's and not once after dark. time to do it. looking forward to it. good luck.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
