rkpolaris
will a shapell portable fish house be dark enough for spearing?
MJ1657
I'm not familiar with that brand of house but if it's reasonably dark you should be ok. You can put a blanket or something similar if it is real light.
rkpolaris
it is a cheap fleet farm brand, the canvas is dark in color but not very thick
BehindtheHead
the best way to figure it out is set it up on the lake. if you can see pin holes in the water or any glare you have some work to do. get some gorilla tape or some really good sticky tape and tape all of the seams and stitching. usally the canvas isnt the problem its just the pin holes in the stiching.do the taping inside where its warm the tape will stick better.i tape over the window over the hole on my mankato tent and awning houses. merkman
i would like one that i can use for a long time Then you are in the $150 to $250 plus range. The hard part is most of these are handcrafted and usually backordered.I am not sure who has good spears made up ready to sell. rkpolaris
ok what are the differences from a $50 spear to a $100 spear
MJ1657
A cheap spear will get you out spearing if nothing else is available or in the budget. I would imagine you could get a good part of your money back out of it when you can upgrade. I bought a "cheap" spear years ago and it works great for me. It throws straight and holds the fish on it. That being said i'm about ready to upgrade after hanging out with you guys on this board and seeing how beautiful some of their spears are. I just can't decide which one to get. merkman
Just pick up a plasma cut spear from your local bait shop. That will get you started. You will only want to spear "straight down" with this type when starting out. Wait until the fish is all the way into the hole before throwing the spear. With these heavy spears you really don't have to "throw" them just let go or give them a gentle push as you let go and you are good to go.Always mark your spear holes before leaving the lake and make sure to put all ice chunks back in the hole. Don't leave them on the ice for a 4 wheeler, car, truck, or sled to find at midnight!!!
MJ1657
I just bought plasma spear for someone as a xmas gift at FF for $69.
Laska
I love the lakco lazer cuts for $70 but I also like the dillo style spears for $175 its all based on opinions. Go to a decoy show next one is Grand Rapids Feb 12th they should have a spear seller there they looked pretty sweet but they did cost around the dillo spear price. merkman
Go to a decoy show next one is Grand Rapids Feb 12th they should have a spear seller there. I have seen some good deals (less than $75) on old school spears at Perham for a guy who had a whole table of old spears.

Laska
I plan on going to the grand rapids show, just need to get back on making decoys... I was invited to spear with another decoy maker-plastic deaks who live in grand rapids so I might go up early to go spearing around there.
