Will this work?

Recommended Posts

Snow blower tire with a leak around the bead. Steel rim, no corrosion. I know I should get some bead sealer but it's too darn cold. I've pumped it up to about 40 psi. Will it hold? Any home remedies or do I have to visit NAPA?

Not a fan of "fix a flats" but I have seen slime work wonders. Had to put some ATV tires on the back of a 1969 cub cadet. One tube got torn while wrangling those stiff tires on by hand. Air came out as fast as it went in, even with the valve core removed. The owner of the tractor had enough tire wrestling and he had a half dose of slime and it worked immediately and hasn't needed air in two years. If it can make a tubed tire tubeless, I think a bead leak would be no problem.

Again, only use this on low speed tires. Any high speed use will result in an imbalance.

the reason slime does not work for bead leaks is that it can not reach them. Sure if you have the tire off and it has slime and the bead is leaking and you rotate the tire so the slime can get into the leak it will probably seal it. Once the tire is on the piece of equipment the slime will sit to low in the tire to seal another bead leak should it occur.

The only way possible for slime to not reach the bead would be on a sationary tire. Rotation to spread it around is part of the intructions on the bottle. We are also talking a snowblower tire here. Centrifugal force need not apply.

I too was skeptical of slime until I actually tried it. It was by far the easiest and cheapest solution on that old cub cadet.

For a car tire- NO WAY! Well maybe, for a field beater.
