Which Flasher to get

Hey all I'm new to the site. Looking to really get into ice fishing this winter. I usually fish north western Wisconsin lakes (polk, barron, washburn counties) and mainly target bluegills and crappies. Anyways I'm looking to finally get a flasher. Im looking to spend aroun 300 dollars and I really cant decide what one I want to get. Either the ICE 35, VX-1, or FL-8. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I will be the only one in the group with a flasher so IR isnt huge but might be beneficial down the road.

Thanks for your responses, and good luck fishing!

Last year I picked up the LX-1 and it seems to have most of the "perks" the mid fl's have like seeing the bottom 6 ft on the left side of the graph. We went out to Mille lacs last winter I had my lx1 and my brother had an fl 12 and he had to have his gain in the upper 3/4 to be able to see his jig and i had mine in the lower quarter of the range and could see my jig fine. IMHO the LX-1 is the most cost effective.

I have a Humminbird ICE-35 and have to say I love the screen compared to my buddy's vex fl-8. It is much bigger and you can see it from pretty much any angle. The vex has the sunshade around the screen that blocks your view a bit. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of these models suggested. I think you will be happy with whichever one you get and you will catch more fish for sure. I have already caught more fish this year than the last couple years put together(no flasher) because of my flasher.

You're going to hear lots of guys say go with vex, or go with hb, or go with marc. You aren't going to hear any negatives about any of them. The bottom line is they are all good performing sonar units.

In the price range you're looking at, you'll get more features on the marc and the hb than you will on the vex.

My favorites are the marcs, I think they have the best target id and separation, and I like their smaller, more compact size, because I hole hop a lot. Other guys really like the big flat panel display on the hb.

Hope that helps a bit. You can check them all out at Flashers At Pro Fishing Supply if you want. Good luck and have fun shopping! It should be easy because there really is no wrong answer to the question you asked laugh

Just would like to ask a question from you Marcum guys... Do you ever run into issues with your electronics making a mess of your buddies stuff? Practically all of my fishin buds run Vex, so when I looked to buy, I went Vex (again). Fishing mostly in the metro ain't like it was years ago, so I'd prefer to have my buddies with me....not against me. Just curious.... Thanks.

No, as long as your buddies know how to push the interference rejection button it will be fine. One of my long time fishing buddies refuses to let go of his FL-12...he still drives a 1984 Honda three wheeler also crazy and we fish side by side in shallow water and even fished in the deeps of Whitefish Bay and never have trouble with my LX-5 or his Vex.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
