Anyone dreaming of walking into that fresh patch of giant morels this spring??

I know I am.

Its only a few months out ya know... I've been noting locations of bald elms everywhere I go smile

How odd is this. I'm cooking up one of my last bags right now for dinner and was just thinking about how long it's going to be before getting some more! smile

Come about March I must look like a drunk driving down the road from craining my neck and swerving to look for groups of dead elms. I swear its a sickness. I notice it the most just as everything is starting to turn green and the dead elms stick out like sore thumbs.

I will tell you this, though. I had as much fun this past September looking for hens as I have had any morel season. They are a great way to stock the freezer with shrooms for the winter about the time your morels are running low. Taste great, too.

Here's a pic of one days picking last spring just so you remember what they look like! smile I guess I still would like to get some Walleye's & Laker's yet this winter before moving to the next season. But I am down to my last bag of frozen ones and need to pick up a few eye's or a nice Laker to cook them with! grin

You look for elms I look for groups of popple. Once ice fishing is done. I get some serious morel fever, adding some oysters this year.

You look for popple's? What is your reason for doing that? Since I have mostly poplar's on my land, I would be very interested to hear why! 1DIRTBALL wink

Black morels like popple. Here in the Crosslake area I usually start picking the blacks 3rd week in April until the middle of May. Not many elms in this area. Blacks are done well before the yellows pop but are very tasty.

I've found them under a single live oak tree in the middle of a grass field...go figure.

The pickin season sure seems distant right now.

By an Oak that would be very odd? I have never found any by Oaks.
