Rocks

My Daughter really likes rocks, so I got her a polsher/tumbler today. We are going rock hunting tomorrow and was wondering if anyone knew of any lakes that have nice rocky shores, with maybe some unique rocks and Agats? Preferably in the South Metro area.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin

I don't know of any lakes with nice rocky shorelines but parts of the Minnesota River are rip-rapped. Plus I would think the river transports alot more material than any lake. You might find anything down there.

I know DARK30 is an avid rock hunter... maybe he will chime in. He is a regular on here, mostly in the MN River forum.

My cousin owns a rock/agat/antique shop in the Duluth area. I was just there a couple weeks ago, place is packed full of rocks, agats, and priceless antiques, a very cool place. He gave me some polished rocks and agats for a gift when I was younger. Some of those rocks he has in his shop are pretty expensive!

Sheephead, Hope you found some good ones! I didn't see this thred till just now. I find a lot of agates along the Minnesota River in gravel deposits but the best place to look is in gravel pits. If you can gain permission to get in one, look in the older areas that have been rained on for some time. Its very addictive!

Theres another thred on here somewhere...You might have to check back a few pages..Its called "Any Rockhounds Out there" I think.

I found another batch of "weekenders" yesterday south of Belle Plaine. One of these days, I'll find the "lifetimer"!

I've got a tip for finding bigger agates and cool rocks. Look around the neighborhoods for houses that have river rock for landscape cover around their house or trees. I've knocked on a few doors and asked permission to pick a few rocks out of the bushes. Get some funny looks and a few turn downs, but most will allow me to if I explain what I'm doing and promise not to take very many. Usually, I can come up with 15 or 20 golfball-sized agates around a house.

Have fun!
