Qualcomm's New Dual-Core Snapdragons Claim 75% Power Savings

posted Today, 4:31 PM by Eric M. Zeman

Speaking at an analyst event, Qualcomm’s Steve Mollenkopf announced the new Snapdragon MSM8960 processor for mobile devices. The MSM8960 will feature a dual-core design on what Qualcomm calls a new "micro-architecture" that offers a five-fold increase in performance while decreasing power consumption by 75%. The MSM8960 will support Long Term Evolution in addition to all 3G radio technologies, though Qualcomm didn't specify at exactly what speeds. Qualcomm says the MSM8960 will also include a four-fold increase in graphics performance as well as Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and FM radios. Qualcomm didin't mention support for 3D gaming, nor other multimedia features, such as camera and video camera support. The chip will be fabricated using 28 nanometer process technology. Qualcomm expects the chip to sample at some point in 2011.

I wonder if that is the new processor that we be going into the Iphone for Verizon networks.

There's a 0% chance Apple would ever use this chip. This is just a die shrink/tweak of the dual core snapdragons that are currently being sold by Qualcomm, but haven't yet made it into consumer phones.

Here are the full stats on the lesser parts in that series:

Code:
MSM8x60 chipset platform consists of the MSM8260™ and MSM8660™.

    * Scorpion asynchronous dual-CPU cores, up to 1.2GHz for faster response and processing
    * Integrated 3G mobile broadband connectivity
          o MSM8260 support for HSPA+ networks – up to 14 Mbps downloads and 5.6 Mbps uploads – as well as GSM , GPRS and EDGE
          o MSM8660 support for HSPA+ networks – up to 14.4 Mbps downloads and 5.76 Mbps – as well as CDMA2000 1X , 1xEV-DO Rel A/B, GSM, GPRS and EDGE
    * Low-power 45nm process technology for higher integration and performance
    * High-definition (1080p) video recording and playback up to 30 frames per second
          o Multiple video codecs: (MPEG-4, MPEG-2, H.264 , H.263, VC-1, DivX, WMV-9, Sorenson Spark, VP6)
    * High-performance GPU – up to 88M triangles/sec and 532M 3D pixels/sec and dedicated 3D/2D acceleration engines for Open GLES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 acceleration
    * High-resolution WXGA (1280x800) display support
    * 16-megapixel camera support
    * Built-in eighth-generation gps engine with Standalone-GPS and Assisted-GPS modes
    * Support for Wi-Fi ® and Bluetooth® connectivity
    * Multiple audio codecs: (AAC+, eAAC+, AMR, FR, EFR, HR, WB-AMR, G.729a, G.711, AAC stereo encode)
    * Support for mobile broadcast TV (MediaFLO™, DVB-H and ISDB-T)
    * Support for Android™, Brew® Mobile Platform and Windows® Phone

After playing with the droid now id rather have an Android over the Iphone any day

The original Droid? You have to be kidding me. The Droid 2 IMO is the same thing just a little biger than the iPhone 4. Droid X to the iPhone 4, IMO no chance.

10-4 PI. I do not mind the iPhone 4.0.(what ever), but it does limit you to what you can do. Proprietary as heck. This should mean nothing to a person who just uses the phone is actually better. For those who like to expand (hack the second party features) with third party stuff, it is tough.

The iPhone has been threatened with it, but was able to fix/catch it before it went global, but I wonder when the first big viral virus is going to be released involving cell phones? It is not a matter of "if", but when. I bet it will show up via SMS from the provider. Open and your done. grin

The Russians are always the first with virus stuff.

June 2004.

The first virus to spread from one cell phone to another has been created and called Cabir.

Cabir has no malicious capabilities and affects only a small slice of "smart" phones that run on both the sophisticated Symbian operating system and have a Bluetooth connection. It has been written by a group called 29a.

LOL Nick, youz a Apple hater. I do not care for them either, but am not a hater and look beyond one product. laugh

I may hate Apple but it doesn't change the point that as a company Apple is extremely reluctant to switch hardware, and takes far longer to adopt hardware when it finally decides to go that route. If you don't believe me, just watch the Mac lineup and watch how long it takes them to adopt Sandy Bridge (the new parts will have a 2xxx number (ie Core i5-2300) so you know those are the new parts). You will be able to buy them everywhere else January 2011. I'd be surprised if they were in any Mac before 2012.

I read the same report about a month or so back. Some company was contracted to start building CDMA parts for the iPhone and that fired up the speculation again.

Verizon iPhone: Apple's Worst Kept Secret

Throw another Verizon iPhone rumor into the quickly-growing pile.

The latest scuttlebutt comes from Fortune magazine, citing multiple sources that say the Verizon iPhone will launch in early 2011. It will reportedly be an iPhone 4, running on Verizon's CDMA network, and for U.S. users there won't be any special chip for operating the phone outside the country.

If you've been following these rumors, chances are you've heard some of this stuff before. A few weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple will start mass-producing a Verizon iPhone at the end of this year for an early 2011 launch. The Journal tipped Taiwan-based Pegatron Technology Corp. as the manufacturer, same as an earlier report from DigiTimes.

This is from yesterday:

Quote:
A major near-term catalyst for Qualcomm is the expected launch of CDMA iPhone. Apple Inc. (AAPL - Analyst Report) is likely to introduce its first CDMA iPhone 4 with Verizon Wireless (VZ - Analyst Report) by end 2010/early 2011. Qualcomm is the main chipset supplier for CDMA iPhone 4.

Several industry sources have also predicted that Apple may also use Qualcomm’s dual-mode CDMA/WCDMA chipset for its upcoming iPhone 5. Using Qualcomm’s chipset will enable iPhone 5 to become operational on every U.S. and European wireless networks.

I have been in computer networking since 1997 and Apple killed themselves hanging on their proprietary network protocol when everyone else (well other than Novell but that is another story) went the IP route. Killed them, it was hell putting them on a network and making them play well with the rest of the world. Made the decision for many businesses to not put them on the network pretty darn easy.

Hopefully for their sake they aren't that stubborn this go round.

Nick

I tried to find the article were they were talking about Qualcomm and how they were developing something for the Iphone for the Verizon network. Maybe it was just the portion to make it work with the CDMA signal but I thought it was the processor.

Because Qualcomm owns the rights to CDMA and thus you must license with Qualcomm in order to use any sort of CDMA product.
