Looking for pros&cons on drift socks are these good for keeping the front of your
boat from being blown all over. And do you think that you should go with bigger one
that is req.I have a 16ft boat and get blown off coarse when windy (back trolling)
thank for your input

JimBo,
Drift socks will give you a real advantage when it gets too windy to troll with your electric motor and for slowing down your drift on open flats.
The reccomended size for your boat will work fine for back trolling to hold the front straight, but I would go one size bigger if you plan to use it for drifting.
Also, don't skimp and buy a cheap sock! Only a few bucks more will get you a much better and easier to use sock!

Drift socks are a necessary part of any walleye anglers arsenal. Like Cliff has already said, buy the good ones! smile.gif

The ability to control your boat in any conditions means more fish. Not only in
high winds but also to control how fast you troll. I also use them when I'm in a long drift, casting for Muskies. smile.gif

Fishing big water with a lot of wind it is a great way to maintain boat control, if you can set it up correctly.
My dad incorrectly tied the drift sock up to the boat, not only was it not slowing us up much, then it came loose. We didn't notice it, until i snagged it with about 50 yards of line out. Luckily i got it up and into the boat, without my line snapping.
My suggestion is to have everything set up before you get out in the big waves.

I have two drift socks. One is one of the blue coated ones that Cabela's carries, the other one is a fancy one with floats on one side and weights on the other; I won't post the brand name. The only time the fancy one gets wet is when I need to use two at once; it is a pain, gets tangled and won't open up. The simple blue coated one I just toss over the side of the boat and pick up my fishing rod; no reason to watch it, it opens every time. No frustration! My vocabulary expands when I use the fancy, expensive one.

If you are able to match the sock with the boat size AND motor size you can get it to move slower and be able to hold a tight break alot better than useing a trolling moter.with 2 stokes it seems that if you just idle them they foul out the plugs alot . with a an over sized sock u can put more of a load on the motor and it will not foul the plugs and be more responsive following tight breaks. you will also get alot of funny looks from people when you are moving slower than they can with electrics grin.gif
