Swamp Bucks

Recommended Posts

I've heard of the old swamp bucks that taste bad, but guess I have never had that problem. I've gotten many deer out of the swamps and never had one that tasted bad. Is it the way they handle their kill after, I think so. Any word on this subject ?

i'm no expert on deer, but the term swamp bucks may differ where i hunt. in northern minnesota where i hunt we have a "swamp" that is rather large in area that boarders our hunting area. there are many trails that come out of there. i personaly believe that the deer in our area winter there for there are many large "islands" of cedar and hard ground mixxed in. when we were younger my brother and i walked through that swamp to a road about two miles on the other side in the winter just to see what those "islands" looked like. the ground was solid and the cedars were thick so there was limited light there even on sunny days. the feeling i had walking on these islands of cedars was as if you were in another world. the deer tracks were plenty and some huge buck tracks as well. i believe they winter on these islands and come back to the main forrest to eat. this is my opionion of where i hunt, so it might be different were some of you hunt. i have never noticed a difference in taste in any deer we shot. good luck.

Swamp Buck I think is a relative term. Just because they bed there doesn't mean that they eat there. I think it more depends on the forage that is available for them to eat.

I have had venison from deer that I have shot here in MN amongst mixed hardwoods, and I have had venison from deer that I have shot in the UP of Michigan. Definite difference in the taste. Depending on the area of the UP you hunt, cedar swamps and connifers are the predominant forage.

There is definetly truth to the statement, "You are what you eat".

some of the best tasting deer I have ever ate was out of northern mn grand rapids area. and I ve shot deer from Tracy mn to Duluth I dont agree that corn fed deer taste better all the time and deer that eat a diet of pinecone seeds dont taste like pine cones either if that were the case wisconsin deer would taste like cheese laugh
