Favorite Deer Hunting Ammo

Recommended Posts

Partition golds are great shells but are not as cheap as the SST's. But the SST's are the best shells for the money in my opinion. In every gun I own, the Golds and the SST's are almost interchangable, they sight in almost the same at 50 yards.

Used to shoot the old style 12 ga. Brenneke until I got my new slug gun. The brass on the slugs would expand and wedge the shell in my barrel. Swithed to Winchester Hollow Points from WalMart, $1.99/box when I bought 35 boxes a few years back. Haven't had to buy shells since, think they are up to $2.49/box now. Deer don't run far with a baseball sized exit hole and they leave on heck of a trail to follow. Regardless of the bullet, shot placement is key.

my .270 likes those 150 grain Sierra boattails

The '06 performs best with the Sierra 150 grain boatail as well.

Lil ol .243 likes the 100 grain Sierra boatail.

The new 7mm-08 hasn't blooded anything this year yet but shoots the Speer 130 boattail best and digests the 120 Sierra Flat base excellently. All calibers pattern sub MOA. Takes awhile and some angst to work up a load but it gives a guy more range time and keeps marksmanship skill honed.

I bought a rifled barrel last year for my Rem 1100. I also have a Red Dot mounted on. When choosing ammo I bought a box of every flavor. I was able to get a great consistent group at 75 yards with Remington Premier AccuTip Sabot Slugs.

When I was testing and researching shells last fall I came across a Video that shows the shock wave of Accutip in ballistic gel.

Field: I seen 1 deer all last season, one doe came along at 100 yards last fall. One shot, double lung (right where I aimed), 60 yards mad dash and done.

I am shooting winchester power max 150 gr in my 300 wsm. Last year was the first year I used them after the price of silvertips almost doubled. Did a good job on the deer I shot. I cant believe how many guys are shooting 180 gr and up bullets for whitetails Not knocking anyone but is there a reason you guys prefer the heavier bullets?
