Android Updates

Recommended Posts

I just manually pushed 2.3.20. One step closer to Gingerbread!

So far in the update we are looking at:

Improvements:

* Improved battery life.

* Heightened proximity sensor accuracy to enable faster screen response.

* View the Weather widget in both landscape and portrait orientation.

* Simpler setup, improved user interactions, and better notifications for Visual Voice Mail.

* Background mail Sync during display inactivity for better user experience.

* Support for email domain suffixes containing more than three characters.

* Keep text messages organized with chronological in-box screen.

* Edit text messages after you’ve inserted a video file.

* Improved audio sound during recorded video playbacks.

* Stream Guided Tour videos on device in Help Center application with ease.

* Faster location tracking during GPS navigation.

* Faster transitions between Wi-Fi and 3G in data connection.

Enhancements:

* New ability to add pictures from your Gallery to a contact.

* Export all your contacts to the SD card.

* VZ Navigator pre-installed.

Seems these are device specific updates. Anyone else get a update?

I noticed the unlock screen the slider was moved up a bit. Couldn't figure out why it looked different.... Not sure I like it but I will get use to it

If it is available for your device it will prompt you to download. Version 2.2 (codename=Froyo) may not be available for your phone yet and quite possibly may never be available.

I got it on my EVO some time ago already but it depends on your carrier and when they do their own testing and product acceptance for each device. Since the EVO was a flagship phone for Sprint I'm sure they bumped it to the top of the list to make sure it's compatible and passes all their standards.

What phone are you running?

I tried to update my 2.3.15 Droid X, but it said all updates already installed.

There is a difference between system version and Android software. I have 2.3.15 on my DroidX as well.

The latest Android software is 2.2 or also know as Froyo.

Motorola really made things confusing by naming their phones Droids. It would be like naming a laptop Windows.

A few weeks ago My Motorola Droid updated to 2.2. It currently says it is up to date. Since updating my phone has really started to [PoorWordUsage] me off. Originally I was as happy with this phone as I have ever been. But now if I do not hold the phone in the right position or go from low light to brighter light I find myself hanging up on phone calls all the time. Anyone else experience this? I am sure my light sensor needs adjusting. Anyone know how?

Found the answer to my previous post. Design error the screen sensor is located top right of the screen when using the phone on my right ear no problem, on sunny days using my left ear big problem. I downloaded an app that blacks the screen functionality out while speaking. fixed.

I thought maybe I just got the Gingerbread update on my DroidX today, but I guess not. Oh well, it's an update at least:

The Droid X will indeed get a new update from the mothership, and by that I surely mean Verizon and there’s a PDF file to confirm that. What’s weird about the update is it’s codename: 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.USIBP_C_01.09.07P) which would make users think they’re looking at a speedy Android 2.3 Gingerbread version for the Droid X.

But that’s not the case, and, even if Verizon is going to offer the new firmware in the very near future, we’re still looking at good old Froyo here. In fact here’s what you can expect from this particular update here:

Enhancements:

+ Preloaded Madden NFL football game.

+ Preloaded Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1.

+ Preloaded MyVerizon application (v5).

+ Added Data Widget to home panel.

+ Improved Android™ OS Froyo stability.

Improvements:

+ Improvements to Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync®:

• Enhancements to corporate email sync and push stop.

• PIN lock timeout now follows the server’s settings.

• Enhancements to SMTP authentication.

+ Improvements to Visual Voice Mail:

• “Failed delivery to” message displays correctly when

messages can’t be sent.

• Audio routes correctly to speaker, even when connected

to a mono Bluetooth® headset.

+ Other improvements:

• Device now supports MP3 media files after MR2 update.

• Music Play now runs smoothly and without lock-ups.

• Weather widget stays with assigned location updates, not

current location.

• “Smart Profile: Face Down” feature will not permanently

disable the phone’s ringer.

• Enhanced audio sync when playing high quality WMV videos.

• Improved video playback.

• Clearer colors assigned to soft keys in applications such as

Google Maps.

• In the Contacts widget, keyboard now appears when using

“type to search.”

• Eliminated camera “Force Close” errors.

• Device lock remains, even after a long, hard key press.

• Quicker wake-up of display when on a call.

Found this on another forum... apparently 'android version' and 'system version' are two totally different things. Most of you are referring to a system version, while Gingerbread (Android 2.3) is a completely new OS version of Android, having nothing to do with '2.3.20'.

"On my D2 and I'm looking at it right now in the about settings it lists Android Version as 2.2, and has System version as 2.3.20 Verizon. Not Motorola."

"It says, and you just clarified, android version is 2.2. System version has NOTHING to do with what iteration of android it is... On about phone on D1 there isn't even a system version number, does that mean the D1 has no android on it?"

I did it manually, but if the "check for updates" box is checked it should check periodically on it's own.

One significant thing that the update did add was the Swype keyboard. I've been running a beta since this summer and it's the only thing that makes typing on a virtual keyboard tolerable for me. If you happen to have the Swype beta installed, be sure to uninstall the Swype program itself as well as the Swype updater app prior to installing the EVO update.
