Laptop loses date and time every day.

Recommended Posts

I have a newer laptop, Asus K52 with Windows 7.

Early on after I bought it, every time I would start the computer the current date and time would be lost and it reverts backs to the date I'm sure the software was loaded at the factory.

After a couple weeks, it was fine and stopped doing it. Now recently, the computer is doing it again. It loses the date and time almost every night.

Any thoughts?

Powerstroke it may very well be your CMOS battery but considering how new your laptop is that really should not be the problem.

This is from Microsoft and might very well be your problem:

APM Settings

Disable APM in the BIOS and configure Windows to manage APM. For information about how to disable APM in the BIOS, please contact the manufacturer of your computer.

To configure Windows to manage APM:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click Power Management, select the settings you want for APM, and then click OK.

Powerstroke you would get into your BIOS on your Acer by hitting either F2 or DEL while the computer is booting up and then go to the Power Management area. Make sure to save your changes when you leave BIOS.

Hope this gets you headed in the right direction.

I would check to see if you have any warranty on the before going and making any changes to the system. If it not too old and still under warranty of some sort no sense in going through any workarounds. Worth a phone call.

It does sound like the CMOS battery went bad or was bad from the beginning. Typically not hard to change once you figure out how to get inside(every laptop is different, even from model to model from the same vendor) and not expensive either.

Its definitely still under warranty since its only 4 months old. I'm not that tech savvy so I'm not too interested in working in the bios. I'll mention it to my IT guy at work.

If it comes down to it, I can use the warranty too. Are there any other changes I may notice from a failed CMOS battery? This is the only problem I have with this computer.

A friend of mine ordered a dell XPS 8100 desktop about a month ago and she shut it down while the storm went thru last week. When she turned it back on all she got was 3 beep that kept cycling. Tried unpugging etc, finally called tech support and they said to pull the battery and replace. I got a new one and installed and it worked fine...gotta wonder why a new computer is draining the battery?

Is the BIOS thing the possible problem with this one too?

I asked tech support if this was going to be an issue in the future and he said if it was to use the same reference # when we call in. Not a very good answer on their part if you ask me, but same situation as powerstroke.

Powerstroke if is is under warranty they should be the one swapping in a new battery. They may ask you to change, but I think you could say no and ask them to send someone out or bring it somewhere that does warranty work on PCs/Laptops and have them pay for it.

I was taking a look at a friend's computer that would only put dots on a blue screen so I pulled the battery and let it sit for a couple of hours and put the battery back in and it booted up just fine.

Powerstroke Get it fixed under warranty and save yourself the hassle. Might just be a bad batch of batteries out there.
