Marine Hand Radio

Anyone know if its illegal to use a marine hand held radio on land this is a Eagle 1 to 5 watt, if so what is the penalties?

Yes, it is illegal. VHF marine bands are designated for use on water, not on land, and the FCC is in charge of that.

I have no idea what the penalties would be, or if it's even monitored or enforced at all.

Thanks I have been doing some research and see it is illegal unless you get a land utility use license which doesn't sound that easy.

There are a lot of better choices for land use that are usually better on batteries. The Marine Band hand helds I have seen are poor on batteries. Some guys only turn them on in emergencies or to talk to friends real quick.

Actually sense cel phones have gotten so good and popular I dont hear 75% of the radio chatter I used to on Lake Superior/Duluth/Superior. Lots of the "Fish are biting here" reports are all done by phone now.
