I have a neighbor who we have suspected of baiting deer for the past couple years. This year I finally know for a fact that they do bait. But I have not seen it myself, I just got confirmation from a buddy that has been back there. What kind of information do I need to call them in?

"What kind of information do I need to call them in?"

The best info that you can give is the location of the bait (as precise as possible), type of bait (corn, sugar beets, ect.), when was the last time it was baited, who does the baiting, when do they hunt (archery/firearms, morning/evening)and anything else that will help the officer find the bait and "hunter"... And the officer would like to know if there are game cameras on the property, if you have that info.

What would you need to find the bait if you had never been on the property before?

Leave your name and number for the officer, he might have questions for you, you can still remain anonymous.

I am glad I ran across this topic.

Has anyone ever called in anyone for hunting or fishing law breaking?

I saw a guy fishing. He had 4 rods at his spot. two lines/bobbers were in the water and he was pitching a jig as well. I talked with him for a while, pretended I didn't notice. Than he caught a fish and I asked what he had on for bait. He said sunfish.

I didn't say anything as I have used two rods before, and probably have used illegal bait, I know I have also maybe stepped over land borders while hunting ect.

The fact is, hes was doing it in the clear of day where people can see him, Maybe that's what made me want to call. But part of me didn't because I know I have personally crossed the line at some point in my life where I broke the same laws. Should I feel guilty or should I make the phone call.

If your are driving down the road doing 56 in a 55, you are breaking the law. Are you the only one, probably not. Does that mean you shouldn't call 911 when you get passed by someone doing 110? If you are losing sleep from feeling guilty, I think you have already learned your lesson and will think twice before it happens again! just my opinion.

I have called someone in for baiting. Infact the person I called on got caught and so did their entire party. I caught them baiting the night before rifle season. I was bowhunting legally and they were setting up for rifle season legally, except for the large sacks of corn.

I called it in that night. The CO called me back and asked for info. He found the bait that night then set up on them in the morning. My name were never mentioned in the report, but the hunters told me I was not allowed to hunt there ever again. They didn't say why since they had no proof, but I'm sure they knew.

I wish I could still hunt there, but I would never share land with cheaters. The worst part was they were teaching their sons to hunt that way when they got caught. I would definitely do it again.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
