Remington 1100 problem with ejecting empty

Recommended Posts

The gun sometimes doesn't eject the first fired shell. I heard something about adding piston rings, or shooting 3" shells. Will this help?

I'm shooting 2 3/4" 7 1/2 shot heavy game load (Estate). Maybe switching to Federal might work?

Make sure the gun is clean and well oiled. Check the piston O-rings and make sure that they are making a tight seal and that their are no cracks or knicks in the 0-rings. Also make sure that the rings are all put together right. If you don't have a diagram, you can find one pretty easily online if you do a google search.

you probably need a new barrel seal, they should be replaced every couple years. Also, they don't tend to like too much oil, ecpecially Rem-oil which gets gummy with heat and thick in the cold. Also, check the gas hole in the barrel, they sometimes get fowled with bits of wad as it passes by, a small punch cleans it nice.

Is the barrel seal the rubber o ring near the top?

I don't use oil, heard it was better to run them clean and dry. I'll check the parts and the gas hole though.

Thank You.

Sorry, when I said oiled, I meant the action. However, I would spray a cloth with a light oil and then wipe everything down in the gas system, just to give it some rust prevention, but would not "lube" it so to speak. A little wire or stiffer pipe cleaner work well on the gas port/hole also.

I wasn't thinking and forgot about the gas hole. It was plugged a bit, and I replaced the o-ring. Found a few new ones that I had stashed away for an 11-87. Hopefully it will do the trick.

It's the 3" magnum version. I have the problems like 50% of the time, and haven't shot it since I replaced the o-ring & unplugged the gas hole. I'll shoot it on Friday and get some answers.

Harvey, what work did you do with yours?

make sure your mag tube is nice and clean where the piston and rings slide too, a little cooked oil on there will slow it down and cause this too, a little hoppe's #9 and 000 or 0000 steel wool will polish it up nicely. Then a very light coat of a good synthetic oil like CLP, not RemOil or WD-40 that will gum with the heat. If you still have troule look into the mainspring in the buttstock being dirty or full of bad oil and crud too. Another idea most people don't like to hear is having a good shoulder mount on the first shot, the gun still needs a solid backstop to cycle correctly.
