"tethering" with t-mobile

Anyone know how to do this? I've been told it's possible but I wouldn't know where to start. we are going to be upgrading our phones to smartphones next month. I live in the sticks, so only have dial up internet. The phones will take the place of our home phone, and the dial up internet. Just wondering how easy it will be to hook a phone up to the PC and use that as the internet connection. I've been told it won't be as fast as on the phone, but that's fine, anything is better than this darn dial up!!!

Thanks.

I'm looking at getting the Vibrant. It's a full touchscreen Droid phone. Wife is looking at the my touch slide. I've been told both are capable of the tethering, but then again, a salesman will tell you anything to get your name on the bottom of the contract!!

I ask about this when I switched to my smart phone and sprint told me that officially it wasn't available to do, but the sales guy said it is possible...he also said that if they catch you doing it they could void your contract.

Why not look into the droid that has it's own hotspot? (droid incredible?) There has to be more than one of those types of phones, then just get a wireless card for your computer.

Void your contract? No, Void your warranty yes!

The first day I got my HTC Touch Pro 2 I voided its warranty by removing the ROM and installing a custom ROM. (ROM = Operating System)

If I ever need work done on my phone I need to format it, reload the Verizon Stock ROM, and than bring it in. And I am 98% positive they will know I did it just for the fact the phone will be as basic as the day I got it, No apps and just phone numbers lol

Just get an iPhone and jailbreak it then use the tethering option on there. From what I understand you need to use the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware. It is not illegal to jailbreak your iPhone either. So you can use it with TMobile. Just Google iPhone tethering to get the info you need and find someone on c*****l selling one that has an older firmware.

The funny thing is, is that we are still talking about it and he probably already has everything set up. smile

I wish smile!!! I'm up for a new contract, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm pretty much set on getting the galaxy, and the wife is getting the mytouch slide.... I'm not very handy with this kind of thing, so I'm always checking this thread for info!!! It's funny. I looked at phones again today. I ask best buy about tethering... their reply is "no problem, not difficult", then at radio shack the same question, thier response is "can't be done". I just have to come up with the money to get the phones, then I'll be trying to do the tethering thing!!

Well since you don't have a phone, like I said earlier I would purchase and iPhone 3GS with the lower firmware and have it jailbroken. Don't buy it from ATT though. I might be selling mine. I have a 16GB 3G I wouldn't mind bumping mine up to a 32gig. I will try the tethering out on my phone and see how it works.

Here is your tethering tutorial for an android app!

Open your App market and type in PdaNet. Download this app.

Upon open you need to download the appropriate version of software to be installed on your computer. Determine which version you need. 32 or 64 bit (see below)

Now you need to find out what bit of windows you are running.

Go to your computer click

Start > Run > and type in "sysdm.cpl" and hit enter

On the general tab, it should say:

System:

Microsoft Windows XP if you are 32-bit version.

it will say:

System:

Microsoft Windows XP x64 if you are 64-bit version.

Download the appropriate version to your phone. Plus your usb cord into your phone, navigate through windows explorer to the place it downloaded.

In my case on my droid 2:

My Computer > Removable Disk > Downloads > PdaNetA245.exe.

Transfer it to your computer, unplug your usb cord. Install this file and follow the prompts.

While installing go to your android phone:

Settings > Applications > Development > Enable USB Debugging.

Once that is enabled and the software is installed on your computer you will be prompted to plug in the USB cord. You should notice a small cellphone icon in your task bar on your computer with different options. Happy Tethering! Keep in mind this is a free version, and secure websites are not enabled(according to the developer.) If you buy the full version secure sites are enabled. (I cannot verify this because I am not buying this application, I simply figured it out so people who want to tether on here can do so)

Happy Tethering!
