LMITOUT
Has anybody done an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7? Just curious how it went, as they seem to make it sound that it's fairly painless. I have a laptop with Vista (32bit) and thinking about making the leap. jwhjr
Upgraded about a year ago and it went off without a hitch.
upnorth
I would back up your data, make sure you have the install files for your apps, then format and go with a vanilla install of 7.
spearchucker
Agree with upnorth on this one. It is more work now, but you are guaranteed to have a working install. This will also rid your system of any garbage or unwanted things that you have picked up over the years of use with Vista.
Shack
Yep, I agree with UP also. Personally when I switch over to a new O.S. I just start fresh and reenter all needed data. Leave the back up stuff and programs on the external HDD. I pull them forward as I need them. As for as going from XP to 7 or Vista to 7, anything I have transfered has not had any concerns. I have been able to open, view, install, use anything.

So are you suggesting buying the full version and not the upgrade version? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$-or-Do you mean format/reinstall a fresh copy of Vista prior to UPGRADING to 7? upnorth
I would go with full version myself. But I have heard the upgrade does work. But like posted prior you will bring all the junk along that was setup with Vista. A clean install is always better. But upgrades do work. DTro
What's a full version going for these days? I have a lappy that has seen better days and needs a wipe/reinstall. Vista is pretty crappy me thinks.Thinking it might be better to get another $300 cheapy lap then to buy the software.
spearchucker
There is no need to spend extra on the full version of Windows 7, just buy the Upgrade version and save yourself some money. The upgrade version gives you the option to perform a clean install of Windows 7. It worked great for me.

There were/are a lot of problems with some Vista users upgrading to 7 versus doing a clean install of 7.

How else can you do it then? What can be the problem with a clean install of Windows?

blakjack23
I always choose a fresh full install over doing an upgrade.
