Scoot
I fished with my mother last night. She's an incredibly good fisherman, having caught more ten pound walleyes than 90-some percent of the fishermen on this site (about a dozen, believe it or not). However, she's never caught a muskie and would really like to. She's in her late 50's so if she's going to do it, she better get crackin'!We fished for about an hour and a half when I got bit hard- whammo! I planted the hooks into a big sklunge and the fight was on. I was extremely excited, already seeing, in my mind, my mom holding the fish I caught for a couple of pictures- it was the makings for an awesome memory (or so I thought). I fought the fish valiantly for quite a while. I got a good look at it several times- a 47 or 48 incher. Yeehaa! This was my biggest muskie by about six inches! When the fish was ready I tried to work it towards the net- easy, easy... Then, as it just started to enter the net it darted sideways planting the bucktail's hooks in the netting. Wham, bam, hooks out of fish ma'am! I made a fruitless effort to get it by the gill plate before it nonchalauntly flipped it's tail and coasted off, no worse for the wear.I almost puked! I looked at my mom and she had a couple of tears rolling down her cheeks. I felt horrible I couldn't get a picture of her with the fish, she felt horrible I lost my fish. Uuuuggh! From wonderful memory and picture to no picture and nightmarish memory in half a second!!!**** fish.Scoot
Steve Foss
Scoot: In some ways, the fish getting away makes a better story, one that can grow each time in the telling over the next 20 years. When your mother's retired and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren are gathered at her feet, it will be a 65-inch musky that ate the motor after it ripped it off the transom, spit it out and punched a hole in the fiberglass boat, forcing you to row frantically to shore to avoid shark bites and death. Ahhh, these stories are why we go fishing, after all, yes? P.S. -- Check out the Bemidji forum. I replied to one of your posts, though it's a little late for your trip, which you've obviously just returned from. ------------------"Worry less, fish more."Steve Foss[email protected]
uffdapete
Hey Scoot - you realize you both did something else 99.9% of us have never done - had a muskie that size on the line that close to the boat - with your mom aboard. In a few years you'll cherish that memory just as much as if you had landed it and taken pics.

can it be luck?
I think this is a good time for all to stop, and call Mom. I spent a the 21-28 of June on Blackduck with my parents and relatives from Japan whom I've met only once, about 40 years ago. It's been about 25 years since I can last remember spending time with my parents like this, and all being in thier 70's there's not much time left. Even at 73 Mom handled net, baited other's hooks, removed and cleaned fish and seemed as though she never aged a bit. But then again, Moms always do everything right. Enjoy the time we have today, they may not be here tommorrow. can it be luck?
