Winterizing a Yamaha 15hp 4 stroke

MN Mike

Recommended Posts

Anything special that needs to be done. I bought one this summer with plans to put it on the boat as a kicker but that didn't happen.

I started it up last weekend, run some new gas thru it with SeaFoam in the gas.

Do I need to do anything for the engine oil? how about the gear lube?

I have no idea when the oil was changed last on either the engine or the gear lube.

Thanks

Mike

Mike, you can download the manual from Yamaha's web site which goes over what needs to be done.

What I do for my F115:

-Make sure the fuel in the lines has seafoam (pretty much always does).

-Pull plugs and spray fogging oil in them (turn engine over a few times with plugs out).

-Drain fuel bowl

-Drain VST

-Change oil

-Change lower unit oil

-Pull prop and check for any fishing line and re-grease.

-Grease all zerks

Think that's about it.

Thanks Hemi,

I see they list a 15hp and a F15hp, not sure which one mine is. The motor itself is a 1998 and it's a long shaft.

What is a VST? does this motor have one?

Do you stick with all Yamaha oil products when you do this? I'll have to travel about 50 miles to get Yamaha products if my local boat guy doesn't have it.

VST stands for vapor separation tank and I doubt the smaller outboards have that. Your engine would be the F15, the regular 15hp would be a 2 stroke I believe.

I personally run Yamaha oil/filter, and Lubrimatic synthetic lower unit oil.
