when I think about it...I've caught quite a few fish on barbless lures...I have a couple swedish pimples that i crimped the barbs on(lake I fished rainbows on required barbless hooks) and they still catch just as many fish...just have to remember to keep more tention on the rod and let the rod do the work........sometimes I wonder if barbs are really that necessary...not like we're fishing for that last meal and can't afford to loose a couple of fish....lol...plus....safer...and we know all about that!....jon

According to a study of barbless hooks conducted in Great Britain, which I saw in In-Fish, barbless hooks can actually increase fish mortality because the hook penetrates deeper causing more bleeding. If I remember correctly the study was conducted mostly on trout and northerns.

I wish mine would have been a hook. A friend and I went fishing and came back with some walleyes. We got the boat home and put it in the garage. My friend was standing by the boat and getting ready to put the fish on a stringer. I came walking up to him and suddenly felt incredible pain in my left foot as his filet knife that fell out of his pocket got stuck into my foot 1.5 inches. The knife was laying on the garage floor and the only thing I can think of is that I stepped on it with my right foot and my left foot was stabbed moving forward. Not only did the stab would hurt, but my toes probably hurt worse. I cut the main nerve going to my toes. I now have a numb big toe and tingling in my other toes if I move my foot in the wrong way. Took me 4 weeks til I could walk normal.

When I was 10ish I was fishing a big zara spook or something and had a big hit. I set the hook as hard as I could, bring my arms up close to my body. Well, the fish missed and that thing came zingin strait at me. I saw it coming and tried to lean back so it would fly over my head matrix style. It didn't. That sucker hit me square in chest, the rear hook getting my nipple and the front hook got the meat on my thumb/palm area. It didn't hurt at first but when I tried to put the pole down the line was tight and that sucker da*m near ripped my nipple off. Not wanting to go home and be banned from fishing for my entire life by my over protective mother I pulled out my pliers and cut the hook off pushing it the rest of the way through my thumb. Didn't feel good... Now for the nipple, a little more difficult. This one was all the way through like a nipple ring. And I couldn't get at it to cut the hook. So I squished the barb, pulled on it slightly to make the hole bigger so the hook would better and jerked it out as fast as possible. Didn't work very well. The very tip of my nipple is now on the spook which is now free of my body and waving in the wind... Lets just say to this day I have an inverted looking left nipple...

I remember another incident years ago while while sitting on the bank close to a bridge river fishing (buddy and I fishing for northerns)...both of us were sitting waiting for a northern to pull our bobbers down .....We see a guy with a rod walk out onto the bridge and noticed a large daredevil hanging from his rod noticing he's going to try for northerns...well about that time I looked the other way and was looking at my bobber or whatever and all of a sudden I felt this "crack" stabbing pain along the right side of my temple...I looked up dazed and hear this guy on the bridge screaming an apology for hitting me along side the head with his first cast....lol!....luckily the daredevil hit me broadside and the hook only "zipped " my temple leaving a small slice about an inch long...guess the guy had a backlash ....lol!...it could have been alot worse!.....jon

when i was about 14 i had been out fishing and had made the horribly stupid mistake of putting a hook in my pocket. (don't worry it's not as bad as it could've been) well i forgot about the hook, and put the pants through the wash. the next time i tried to put on the pants i buried the hook in the side of my calf. thank god it was my calf.

Was in Canada when the guide got a large treble driven through a leather glove and into his palm. Luckily the pike thrashed off quickly. A side cutter and a leatherman were both unable to cut the heavy treble. I now carrier a pair of heavy nippers, look something like ice tongs, just in case.

While fishing Lake Trout in Ontario I got a treble hook through the web of my hand between the thumb and index fingers, a very very big treble hook like the ones on a five of diamonds. It was a fly-in trip and there was no way to see a doctor. The hook pushed through, but it was too big to clip off so the only option I had was to cut the web of my hand with a fillet knife. It healed surprisingly well, although there is a nasty scar. After that I bent ALL of the barbs on ALL of my lures. I don't fish with any barbed hooks whatsoever anymore. I've had hooks go into my hands twice since then and both times they pulled right out and hardly hurt at all. Yeah, you might lose a fish or two with barbless hooks, but it will save you a trip to the hospital and you'll have fewer scars.

14 years old fishing off a pontoon tied to the dock. There were 3 or 4 of us using long bamboo rods for sunnies. A girl lost her worm and brought her pole around to put more worm on. The end of her pole hit me square in the eye. I sat down thinking the pain would soon go away. When I opened my eye, it was like looking through a red foggy zip lock bag. My pupil was filling up with blood. To make things worse, we had walked out on this dock which was missing a bunch of boards and was 3/4 under water. Spent a week in the hospital and had lots of ice cream.
