Dodge "light load" button

Recommended Posts

Well, my new (to me) truck is here!! '08 Dodge Ram 2500 cummins diesel. This is the first of what will be many questions from a new diesel owner!! There is a "light load" button under the radio by the jake brake. What is it for?? I didn't see anything in the manual yet. Is it like the "tow/haul" only for smaller trailers?? If so, what weight do I use that one vs the tow/haul??

Also, my cousin (previous owner) put cold air intake and 5" exhaust on her. Does the computer need to be "tweeked" to get better mileage, or just let it be??

Anything else I should have done to it being it's from Arizona and will be MN truck the rest of it's life??

Thanks guys!!! like I said, this is my first diesel, so I'm sure i'll have many questions!!

This is an easy one. Look in glove compartment for owners manual. If not there, get to Dodge and get one. Amazing the stuff you might find in there about ALL aspects of your new truck.

And once a diesel man ALWAYS a diesel man!! Ha!

I believe what its for, is if you want to lower air pressure in the rear tires when not loaded (smoother ride) you can adjust the rear air pressure down, which will in turn activate the Tire pressure monitor system light on your dash. The light load button resets this light and adjust it for the lower 45 psi air in the rear tires only. The front tires should stay at 65 since they are loaded all the time with the engine.

I'm not positive about this but its how it was explained to me by a buddy.

Not sure about the light load button honestly. Maybe it tweaks a few parameters in the computer for shift firmness and possibly power/fuel economy? I could underdtand the tire pressure setting too.

For the exhaust and intake you can enjoy those as they sit or get a diablosport predator/ hypertech, ect and have it really wake up in power. Most of those have economy settings too so that would definitly help. The intake/exhaust and computer compliment each other nicely so if you got the money you will like it.

Since your going to be the first one exposing it to salt you might want to get a few good coats of wax on there before winter too. Maybe see about getting it undercoated and rustproofed. Its so much easier to start with a clean slate than it is trying to get rid of rust so keep that baby clean!!

it is for the tpms system on the tires. if you have a tire that is lower than spec, you can push this button to turn off the light and alarm. if you do a search online for the title that you wrote, you will get a ton of info. ufatz noted that you should look in the glove compt for the manual however i did note in your post that you have referred to the manual and could not locate anything. you might look under the tire monitoring system to see if it discussed there.

The best programmer for Dodge Cummins is the Smarty, price around $ 600. If you just need a little better fuel economy I wouldn't go too crazy on these, it will take many miles before you come up even with the cost. Whatever you do to increase performance, remember your transmission will take the consequences, be careful.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
