Hunter Ed (firearms) requirements?

I believe now if a person was born after December 31, 1979 they need to have firearms safety training in order to purchase a license with the exception of being able to buy an Apprentice Hunter Validation for one season, once in a lifetime.

yes you can.

You'll need an hunters apprentice permit/validation and firearm hunting licese.

As long as you're [12 or older] hunting with an adult who meets the hunters education requirements of MN.

So if your buddy is 18 or older and has a hunters ed card,

or is past the age restriction of having to be certified, you're good.

Or do everyone a favor and just take the hunters safety education course. I know it's all common sense and I'm not meaning to insult anyone but I know many a seasoned veteran hunters who still do stupid stuff while hunting. I took the course 3 years ago at the age of 27. Yep myself, about 40 12 years olds and another 5 or 6 adults all taking it, no big deal. I knew 99% of the stuff taught already but since I was born after 12/31/1979 was required to take it. The other guys in the course were simply either taking it with their kid or a couple were going big game hunting in other states and it seems it's becoming the norm in many states to require a hunters education course for all non-resident hunters to obtain a license so this way you also have that out of the way if ever want to go elsewhere and hunt.

You can find courses online and if you are over 18 you have the independent study option also in which you study yourself and arrange it with one of the classes to simply show up on test day and field test day. Pass them both and your done. I did my course in person as it was easier I thought to just attend, but it was just a 1 week course couple hours each night, field day on saturday and done.

+1 I agree it happens too often. Way back in the day when I took my Hunters Ed one of my instructers told a story of a guy sitting in a treestand getting shot by another hunter. When interveiwed later he said "I thought it was a deer." crazy

Do they teach you how to tell the difference between a deer and a human dressed in orange in hunter's education? LOL

Also, don't use your scope to look at your buddies in their stands, use your binoculars.

Seriously... Go to the DNR web site, its pretty self explanatory.

I missed the 1979 cut off by less than a month.

You can hunt with the apprentice license for 1 year only and then you are required to get educated. The online course is fairly easy. It takes some time but way less time than going to classes for #'s of weeks. Then look on the DNR list for certified instructor in your area and contact them to set up a time at their convenience for your field test.

Most instructors are gun enthusiasts and are happy to teach and educate. However I would suggest not waiting until right before prime hunting times to request their services.

Luckily I was born before that date, but I still took the course when I was 12. My drivers license even has my firearm certificate as my endorsement(which I am sure most everyone with it has on their license also). I think that if your 12 or 40 it would never hurt to take the course just to have taken it. Like was said, lots of states require it now anyway to be able to hunt there(if you plan to hunt anywhere else other than Minnesota). I had applied for a tag in Nevada for their mule deer hunt and luckily I had taken the course here. They called the state of Minnesota for me and got my number through them.

I concur! Take the course! I took it for the first time way way back in the 60's. Did a lot of "weapons" and "survival" training in the Air Force. In the last 15 years I have taken the course an additional 4 times as I went with each of the kids and neighbor kid whose dad was not a hunter. Every time I went I learned something!!! Every time I went I shared a story from the past and some one had a light come on and understood the meaning of safety in a different way. NO ONE is ever to smart or to old to learn something, and if that something just happens to save your life or a buddy of yours life then it will be time very well spent. Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

As a FAS instructor, I always welcome the parents or any adults to sit in on the classes. I have had many moms that didn't want to take the class for themselves but after the first break, they signed up. Everyone was glad they did. If you have firearms in the house, everyone in the house should take the course.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
